HELLO EVERYONE AND THANKS FOR JOINING US.I'M FRANK MALLOY.
AND I'M LORRA LYNCH JONES... THIS IS EYEWITNESS NEWS AT SIX.
ELEVEN MEMBERS OF THE MACON-BIBB NAACP... INCLUDING SEVEN ON THE EXECUTIVE BOARD... ARE REQUESTING CHAPTER PRESIDENT DAVID BOOKER'S VOLUNTARY RESIGNATATION.
THAT'S ACCORDING TO DOCUMENTS OBTAINED BY 13WMAZ.
ELEANOR LISSITZYN HAS MORE ON WHY THE NAACP IS ASKING BOOKER TO STEP DOWN
THE LETTER WAS WRITTEN AFTER A SPECIALLY CALLED MEETING ON JULY SEVENTH...
IT SAYS DURING THAT MEETING THEY TOOK A 'MAJORITY VOTE OF NO CONFIDENCE'.
THE LETTER WENT ON TO REQUEST BOOKERS 'VOLUNTARY DEPARTURE FROM BEING THE PRESIDENT... BY TAKING AN INDEFINITE LEAVE OF ABSENCE FROM YOUR POSITION AND DUTIES."
ACCORDING TO THE LETTER... MEMBERS ARE UNHAPPY WITH THE WAY BOOKER HAS BEEN TREATENING NAACP MEMBERS... CALLING HIS BEHAVIOR 'INTIMIDATING AND DISRESPECTFUL.'
THEY ALSO SAY HE HASN'T SUBMITTED PROPER FINANCIAL DOCUMENTS.
AND THAT HE'S WORKING ON THE BEHALF OF HIS PERSONAL AGENDA... NOT THE NAACP'S.
I SPOKE WITH DAVID BOOKER.
HE SAYS HE WILL NOT RESIGN.. BUT HE CAN'T GO INTO DETAIL ABOUT THE COMPLAINT BECAUSE IT VIOLATES THE NAACP'S BI-LAWS.
WE ALSO CALLED NAACP STATE PRESIDENT EDWARD DUBOSE TO GET HIS COMMENTS ON THE RESIGNATION REQUEST.
HE HAS NOT YET RETURNED OUR CALLS.
THERE WILL BE NO GEORGIA STATE FAIR IN 2012.
THE GEORGIA STATE FAIR ASSOCIATION DECIDED TODAY THE FAIR HAS BEEN LOSING TOO MUCH MONEY OVER THE PAST FIVE YEARS.
CANDACE ADORKA SPOKE TO THE PRESIDENT OF THE STATE FAIR BOARD.
HE SAYS THE BOARD RECOMENDED THE FAIR STAY OPEN IN 2012... BUT THE FINAL DECISION WAS LEFT UP TO THE MEMBERS OF THE ASSOCIATION WHO CAST THEIR VOTES.
THE GEORGIA STATE FAIR ASSOCIATION CAST THEIR VOTES HERE AT THE IDYL HOUR COUNTRY CLUB.
STATE FAIR BOARD PRESIDENT DON JOHSTONO SAYS THERE WAS A LONG DISCUSSION BEFORE HAND.
"Pros and cons, lots of different opinions and lots of different feelings, some looking at it from purely a financial analysis, some looking at it from their heart strings and the tradition."
IN THE END JOHSTONO SAYS... NOT ENOUGH PEOPLE WERE ATTENDING THE FAIR... WHIHC HAS BEEN IN MACON SINCE 1851.
HE SAYS HE DOESN'T KNOW WHAT IT WOULD TAKE TO CHANGE THE ASSOCIATION'S VOTE AND PUT ON THE FAIR AFTER 2012 BUT IT COULD HELP IF THE SPECIAL PURPOSE LOCAL OPTION SALES TAX PASSSES IN NOVEMBER WITH IMPROVEMENTS TO CENTRAL CITY PARK.
"we're dealing with buildings down there where we host the fair that are aging, falling apart, not functioning for what we need, so the fact that we operate with that fairground that is old and falling apart is something that's always been kind of a problem."
SINCE 1947...WHEN THEY STARTED COUNTING... JOHSTONO SAYS THE FAIR HAS ADDED MORE THAN 5 MILLION DOLLARS TO THE LOCAL ECONOMY AND DONATED ITS PROCEEDS TO AREA CHARITIES.
"There's gonna be some impact. I think the most noticeable impact will be, you know, here's a recreational and educational opportunity that the community had that because they havn't supported it, may well go away forever."
