UNADILLA CITY ADMINISTRATOR... PERRY IVIE... SAYS IT'LL TAKE THE CITY AT LEAST A YEAR... TO GET A NEW WELL.

Perry Ivie, Unadilla City Administrator: "It's already what we call, 'in the mill.' I've got the engineers working on it."

Amy Aubert, Eyewitness News: "The city has three wells, but Ivie says only two are up and running right now because one completely dried up last month. He says this well behind me was dug 20 feet deeper because it was losing 2 to 3 inches of water a day. He says no one in the city has been without water, but it's important to build a new well for back up."

THE PUBLISHING INDUSTRY IS STILL TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO DEAL WITH THE FAST-GROWING POPULARITY OF E-READERS AND DIGITAL BOOKS.
BUT THE NEW TREND COULD BE GOOD NEWS FOR PAPERBACK LOVERS.
ALISON KOSIK HAS MORE... IN THIS WEEK'S GEEK 13.
<<
IT'S A NEW CHAPTER FOR BOOK PUBLISHERS.
FOR MANY YEARS, THE HARDCOVER EDITION OF A BOOK WAS RELEASED FIRST, FOLLOWED BY THE PAPERBACK ABOUT A YEAR LATER.
BUT WITH THE RAPID GROWTH OF E-BOOKS, ALONG WITH THE BANKRUPTCY AND LIQUIDATION OF THE BORDERS BOOK CHAIN, THINGS SEEM TO BE SHIFTING.
RECENT STATISTICS FROM THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF PUBLISHERS SHOWS THAT PAPERBACK SALES ARE DOWN FROM LAST YEAR, DOWN 18%. BUT HARDCOVERS SALES HAVE DROPPED 23%. THE REASON IS THE RISE IN E-BOOK SALES, THEY'VE SOARED MORE THAN 160% FROM LAST YEAR.
BECAUSE OF THIS, THE NEW YORK TIMES REPORTS THAT PUBLISHERS ARE PUSHING UP THE RELEASE DATES OF THE PAPERBACK EDITIONS, SOMETIMES WITHIN JUST MONTHS AFTER THE HARDCOVER CAME OUT.
A RECENT EXAMPLE IS THE BOOK "SWAMPLANDIA!," WHICH IS A DEBUT NOVEL BY AUTHOR KAREN RUSSELL. THE PUBLISHER WANTED TO CAPITALIZE ON THE LARGE NUMBER OF SUMMER VACATIONERS THAT READ FICTION, AND RELEASED THE PAPERBACK ONLY FIVE MONTHS AFTER THE HARDCOVER.
AND THE PAPERBACK RELEASE OF THE BOOK ABOUT ESPN, CALLED "THOSE GUYS HAVE ALL THE FUN," CAME OUT JUST TWO MONTHS AFTER THE HARDBACK.
SO WHY THE SUDDEN RUSH?
HARDCOVERS SPEND LESS TIME ON THE SHELVES THESE DAYS, AND PAPERBACKS ARE IN DIRECT COMPETITION WITH E-BOOKS. E-BOOKS AND PAPERBACKS TEND TO BE MORE SIMILAR IN PRICE AND CHEAPER THAN HARDCOVERS, SO PUBLISHERS THINK THEY NEED TO MOVE MORE QUICKLY IN ORDER TO KEEP UP WITH DEMAND.
>> HERE ARE A COUPLE OF OTHER STORIES MAKING HEADLINES AROUND THE TECH WORLD THIS WEEK.

TAKE A LOOK AT THIS!
A MAN WHO SPENT SIX DAYS ON A RADIO TOWER IN OKLAHOMA IS BACK ON SOLID GROUND.
POLICE NEGOTIATOR TYRONE LYNN SPENT SIX HOURS WITH HIM, AT 150 FEET IN THE AIR.
THE MAN, WHO HAD NOT HAD ANYTHING TO EAT OR DRINK SINCE FRIDAY, STARTED TO PASS OUT.
I grabbed him to keep him from falling so for a minute there he was just completely out
AUTHORITIES SAID THE MAN HAD MENTAL PROBLEMS... LYNN WAS FINALLY ABLE TO CONVINCE HIM THAT THEY WOULD GET HIM SOME HELP IF HE CAME DOWN.
THE WORLD'S LARGEST RODENT IS ON THE LOOSE IN CALIFORNIA'S CENTRAL COAST.
A CAPYBARA, WAS SITED NEAR A SEWER POND, DRINKING WATER AND EATING PLANTS.
THE SEMI-AQUATIC MAMMAL ORIGINATES FROM SOUTH AMERICA, OFFICIALS BELIEVE IT HAD BEEN AN ILLEGAL PET.
THEY SUSPECT THIS IS THE SAME RODENT SPOTTED IN THE AREA THREE YEARS AGO.
IF YOU'RE HIKING DEEP IN THE WOODS OF HALIFX, NOVA SCOTIA, YOU MIGHT HEAR...PIANO MUSIC.
THE CITY ASKED FOR HELP CREATING PUBLIC ART PROJECTS, SO WILL ROBINSON HAD THE IDEA TO HIDE A PIANO IN THE LARGE CITY PARK.
ANYONE WHO FINDS IT CAN PLAY A TUNE.
That was the original intention, to have this anonymous music or sound coming from, emanating from the forest.
