And by a majority, all be it a slim majority, a majority says we reaffirm the idea of working together, not tearing the community apart, putting it together, collaborating together, working together to get projects of interest done and accomplished."

IF YOU'RE ACTIVELY SERVING IN THE MILITARY... SOME CHANGES COULD BE COMING TO YOUR PENSION PLAN.
SHERRI GOSS WITH ROSENBERT FINANCIAL GROUP IS HERE TO EXPLAIN.
SHERRI... THEY'RE WORKING TO CUT SPENDING... SO HOW MIGHT THAT IMPACT MILITARY MEMBERS?

The legislation passed earlier this month calls for almost a trillion in defense spending cuts over the next 10 years, so the current retirement benefit program is being reviewed. One of the problems is that retirement payouts are expected to double over the next 20 years, due to longevity and inflation. So, here are the things they are considering:

The biggest thing, and this is according to Defense Secretary Leon Pannetta, is they are considering a stop to the 20-year service pension.

Instead, there would be a tiered system, whereby new recruits would get additions to their Thrift Savings Plan accounts, which they keep if they leave after 10 years of service.

They are also considering a reduction in pension payouts to service members who serve more than 20 years. And, they may not receive any pension until age 65.

A big problem with this is they are wanting to make the the military pension plan into a corporate-style pension plan, and many people think there is no comparison between working for a corporation and serving in the military.

The second problem is how this would affect recruiting and retention.

Joint Chiefs Chairman Admiral Mike Mullen says he would push for those currently serving to be grandfathered into the old system, so they are not faced with unexpected, mid-career changes.

The Defense Business Board is expected to offer final recommendations by the end of this month, and any changes would have to be approved by Congress. So, this is something to watch.
