HELLO EVERYONE AND THANKS FOR JOINING US.I'M LORRA LYNCH JONES.

AND I'M FRANK MALLOY..THIS IS EYEWITNESS NEWS AT SIX.

THIS SUMMER'S SEVERE DROUGHT HAS PEOPLE IN DOOLY COUNTY...LITERALLY DIGGING DEEPER....JUST FOR A DRINK....OR A SHOWER.

UNADILLA MAYOR CHARLES WEST SAYS AT LEAST 100 WELLS IN THE COUNTY...HAVE RUN OUT OF WATER.
AS AMY AUBERT SHOWS YOU... THAT HAS ONE WOMAN FEELING LEFT HIGH AND DRY.

<<
Nats, faucet trickling.

FOR THE PAST WEEK... SOME PEOPLE IN DOOLY COUNTY HAVEN'T SEEN MUCH MORE THAN A TRICKLE.

Lavada Helton, Unidilla: "It's hard, you see there we ain't got nothin' but a drip."

LAVADA HELTON OWNS ONE OF THE SIX HOMES IN WEST MOBILE HOME PARK... ALL OF WHICH... HAVEN'T SEEN WATER... SINCE THE WELL RAN DRY.

Lavada Helton: "I ain't cooked nothin' in a week."

Nats, sweeping

THE 75-YEAR-OLD SAYS HER DAUGHTER STOPS BY ONCE A DAY... WITH A JUG OF WATER... FOR DRINKING.

Lavada Helton: "I don't even have enough water to clean the cabinets and stove. Nothin' else, I just wipe them off, that's the best I can do."

AND THE CITY FACES ITS OWN WATER PROBLEMS.

Charles West, Mayor: "We had to take one well off line, it was pumping sand. We have two wells at the present time that are operating, and if one of them goes out, we are going to be in critical condition."

MAYOR CHARLES WEST SAYS... SINCE JULY... CITY WATER LEVELS DROPPED ABOUT TWO INCHES A DAY... SO THEY DRILLED ONE OF THEIR OWN WELLS... 20 FEET DEEPER.

Charles West: "These pumps are maxing out right now, and we just need another well to supply."

Nats, pipe dripping

THE SAME THING... THE MOBILE HOME PARK NEEDS... TO GET THINGS RUNNING AGAIN.

Lavada: "It's rough, it is rough. After used to be walking over to this faucet and turn it on get you a glass and put some ice in it and go on."

Nats, electric pump

WITH ONLY A TEMPORARY SUPPLY TO FLUSH THE TOILET OR BATHE... IT'S A WEEKLONG MEMORY THAT HELTON SAYS... SHE'LL BE HAPPY TO WASH AWAY.

AMY AUBERT 13WMAZ... EYEWITNESS.

MAYOR WEST SAYS A NEW CITY WELL WOULD COST NEARLY A HALF MILLION DOLLARS.
HE HOPES TO HAVE ONE INSTALLED WITHIN THE NEXT YEAR.

STATE CLIMATOLOGIST DAVID STOOKSBURY... SAYS RAINFALL IN PARTS OF DOOLY COUNTY ARE AS MUCH AS NINE INCHES BELOW NORMALOVER THE PAST SIX MONTHS.

ben gives three day forecast

THANKS BEN.. WE'LL TALK WITH YOU AGAIN IN JUST A FEW MINUTES.

THE FIGHT TO LEGALIZE BETTING ON HORCE RACES CAME TO MACON TODAY...

LOBBYIST ED GADRIX (GAY-drix) SPOKE TO THE MACON LIONS CLUB THIS AFTERNOON.
HE TOLD THE CLUB LEGALIZING HORSE RACING COULD BRING A BILLION DOLLARS TO THE STATE'S ECONOMY AND CREATE 10 THOUSAND JOBS.
GADRIX HAS BEEN TRAVELING AROUND THE STATE... TRYING TO DRUM UP SUPPORT FOR LEGISLATION THAT WOULD ALLOW HORSE RACING AND PARi-MUTUEL BETTING IN GEORGIA.
THE BILL IS A CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT THAT PASSED THE COMMITTEE STAGE AND WOULD HAVE TO PASS THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY NEXT YEAR BEFORE GOING TO A STATEWIDE VOTE IN NOVEMBER 2012.
GADRIX SAYS VOTERS SHOULD BE GIVEN THE CHANCE TO DECIDE WHETHER TO LEGALIZE HORSE RACE BETTING.

"People need to contact their state's representatives and senators. They're the ones who decide whether or not people can vote for it. They need to take issues like this and let the people decide how they want to get out of the economic doldrums."

GADRIX IS A LAWYER FROM ROSWELL.
HE'S ALSO HEAD OF A GROUP CALLED THE GEORGIA EQUINE EDUCATION GROUP THAT WORKS TO PROMOTE BETTNG ON HORSE RACES.

FOR FOUR DAYS A FAMILIAR FACE HAS BEEN MISSING FROM EATONTON'S UNCLE REMUS MUSEUM.
THAT'S BECAUSE SOMEONE STOLE ITS WELCOME STATUE... BRER RABBIT... SOMETIME DURING THE NIGHT SUNDAY.

AS LAUREN DISPIRITO SHOWS YOU... MANY IN TOWN NOW WONDER WHY ANYONE WOULD WANT TO STEAL PUTNAM COUNTY'S SYMBOL OF SOUTHERN FOLK TALES.

WHO WOULD STEAL A RABBIT?

Jacque Dupree Myrick, Eatonon: "You know... it's gone"

R.T. Snipes, Orlando, Fla. "Brer rabbit, I don't know how any varmint could have done that."

THE BRER RABBIT THAT IS. THE FICTIONAL CHARACTER AND SYMBOL OF SOUTHERN FOLKLORE... IS NOW THE VICTIM OF WHAT SOME CALL AN UNTHINKABLE CRIME.

Jacque Dupree Myrick, Eatonon: that is a big piece of history in this town, over 40 years, you know I bring my kids and my wife here and we'd talk about it sometimes."

PUTNAM COUNTY SHERIFF HOWARD SILLS SAYS THE STATUE OF THE FAMED RABBIT WENT MISSING FROM THE BRIAR PATCH SUNDAY.

Nats "pried it up, pulled that bolt out"

JUST IN FRONT OF EATONTON'S UNCLE REMUS MUSEUM ... PLUCKED UP FROM ITS GRANITE BASE BY THIEVES.

Howard Sills, Putnam County Sheriff: "I hope it's a prank of some sort and that we'll get a call saying Brer Rabbit is at the beach you can come pick him up now"

BUT IN TOUGH ECONOMIC TIMES .. SOMEONE MAY HAVE MISTAKEN THE STATUE THAT WEIGHS 250 POUNDS.. STANDS THREE FEET TALL... AND IS MADE OF CAST IRON.. AS THE KEY TO COLD HARD CASH.

Howard Sills, Putnam County Sheriff: "I'm worried that somebody thought it was made of bronze and therefore had some value, but it doesn't."

WHILE YOU MAY FIND HUMOR IN JOEL CHANDLER HARRIS'S UNCLE REMUS TALES... FOLKS WHO GREW UP WITH THEM AREN'T LAUGHING.

R.T. Snipes, Orlando, Fla. "Very fond, very sincere, moral giving type events in the stories, and the tar baby, who can forget the tar baby?"

WITHOUT ANY LEADS IN THE CASE.. SOME REST ON THE HOPE... THAT BRER RABBIT MAY HOP BACK OVER... SOON.

EYEWITNESS NEWS

THE STATUE WAS CREATED IN 1985.

SHERIFF SILLS SAYS ANYONE WITH INFORMATION ON THE THEFT CAN CALL THE PUTNAM SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT AT 706-485-8557.

THERE'S LESS THAN A WEEK LEFT BEFORE THE RUN-OFF ELECTION THAT WILL ALSO DECIDE THE DISTRICT 26 STATE SENATE RACE.
AND TODAY... FORMER STATE REPRESENTATIVE DAVID LUCAS HELD A NEWS CONFERENCE TO SAY HIS OPPONENT MIRIAM PARIS... IS DUCKING DEBATES.
LUCAS SAYS HE HAS ACCEPTED THREE DEBATE INVITATIONS... BUT PARIS DECLINED THEM ALL.
LUCAS SAYS HIS OPPONENT IS TRYING TO HIDE HER LACK OF QUALIFICATIONS.

"Unfortunately, the other candidate in this race is avoiding public scrutiny of qualifications based on no educational qualifications, no legislative record and no demonstrated knowledge of process and inability to freely and openly debate issues in public forum. I urge the citizens of senate district 26 to conclude that Miss Miriam Paris appears to be nice, but she is eminently unqualified to represent middle Georgia in the State Senate."

PARIS GOT 45 PERCENT OF THE VOTE ON JULY 19TH... LUCAS 39 PERCENT.
THEY'RE BOTH DEMOCRATS.
THROUGH HER SPOKESWOMAN....WE'VE ASKED PARIS FOR A RESPONSE TODAY...SHE DID NOT RESPOND.
