GOOD EVENING AND THANKS FOR JOINING US..
I'M FRANK MALLOY... THIS IS EYEWITNESS NEWS AT 11.

STEPHEN MCDANIEL WAS CHARGED WITH FELONY MURDER TONIGHT..
THAT'S ACCORDING TO THE BIBB COUNTY JAIL WEBSITE..
HE WAS ALREADY IN JAIL ON TWO BURGLARY CHARGES..
THE FELONY MURDER CHARGE CAME HOURS AFTER A MEETING BETWEEN BIBB COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY GREG WINTERS, POLICE CHIEF MIKE BURNS, MAJOR CHARLES STONE AND LOCAL FBI INVESTIGATORS..
MCDANIEL WAS CONSIDERED A PERSON OF INTEREST IN THE DEATH OF MERCER UNVIERSITY LAW SCHOOL GRADUATE LAUREN GIDDINGS..
HE WAS SCHEDULED TO APPEAR IN COURT THURSDAY MORNING FOR A BOND HEARING IN CONNECTION WITH THE BURLGARY CHARGES..
WE WERE UNABLE TO REACH MACON POLICE SPOKESWOMAN JAMI GAUDET FOR COMMENT ON THE MURDER CHARGE..

GEORGIA'S SENIOR SENATOR SAXBY CHAMBLISS WORKED WITH THE SO-CALLED GANG OF SIX TO PULL TOGETHER A DEBT-CEILING DEAL.
BUT TODAY... THE REPUBLICAN WAS ONE OF 26 SENATORS WHO VOTED AGAINST THE MEASURE THAT WAS APPROVED BY BOTH CHAMBERS OF CONGRESS AND SIGNED BY PRESIDENT OBAMA.
CHAMBLISS SPOKE TO US BY PHONE AFTER THE VOTE...
HE SAYS HE WANTED THINGS LIKE PAY FREEZES FOR MEMBERS OF CONGRESS... AND A BIGGER DOWN PAYMENT ON THE DEBT... AND SAYS HE WAS DISSAPOINTED IN THE DEAL.
Chambliss: "I talk to folks in the market place on a regular basis as well as economists and all of them have told us that we have to have a four trillion dollar deficit reduction package if we're going to send the right message to the market. This package doesn't even come half that far. So I was very discouraged about it from that point.
CHAMBLISS PREDICTED THAT WITHIN THE NEXT FIVE YEARS AN EMERGENCY SPENDING PROPOSAL WOULD SURFACE.. AND THERE WOULD BE SIXTY VOTES IN THE SENATE FOR THE EMERGENCY AND THE SPENDING CAP WOULD BE BUSTED.

MACON CELEBRATED 'NATIONAL NIGHT OUT' TONIGHT..
DOZENS OF PEOPLE PARTICIPATED IN THE EVENT IN THE SHIRLEY HILLS NEIGHBORHOOD AND CITY WIDE.

THE EVENT HELPS PEOPLE COME TOGETHER AND CREATE A VISIBLE ANTI- CRIME PRESENCE IN THEIR NEIGHBOHOODS.
TONIGHT'S EVENT BEGAN AT CITY HALL WHERE DEPUTY POLICE CHIEF MIKE CARSWELL RALLIED FOLKS TO GET OUT AND MAKE IT A NIGHT TO REMEMBER.
Mike Carswell: "We come together tonight to say 'goodnight' to evil, and 'hello' to good. 'Goodnight' to poverty and 'hello' to prosperity. 'Goodnight' and 'goodmorning' to a stronger and safer Macon."
THE EVENT FEATURED ENTERTAINMENT AND REFRESHEMENTS..

STARTING TOMORROW... FOLKS HEADING INTO MACON ON SECOND STREET WILL HAVE TO TAKE A DIFFERENT ROUTE.
MACON POLICE SPOKESWOMAN JAMI GAUDET SAYS THE TWO INBOUND LANES WILL CLOSE FROM WALNUT STREET TO MULBERRY STREET.
CITY ENGINEER BILL CAUSEY SAYS THERE WILL BE ADJUSTMENTS FOR COURTHOUSE TRAFFIC... BUT OTHER DRIVERS WON'T BE ABLE TO GET THROUGH.
INSTEAD... THEY'LL NEED TO MAKE A RIGHT OR LEFT ONTO WALNUT STREET.
THE TWO OUTBOUND LANES WILL STAY OPEN.
GAUDET SAYS THE CLOSURES WILL BE IN EFFECT FOR ABOUT THREE WEEKS.

A MILLEDGEVILLE GROUP IS PUTTING A FRESH IDEA... ON KEEPING IT COOL AT THE LOCAL FARMER'S MARKET.
AS AMY AUBERT SHOWS YOU... ONE FARMER LOOKS FORWARD TO NEXT SEASON'S CHANGES... THAT'LL BRING SHADE TO HIS VEGETABLE STAND.
<<
Nats: "Okay what else for you?"

WARREN MOORE KNOWS HOW TO PICK THEM.

Nats: "No butter beans?"

HE CALLS HIMSELF... THE MATER MAN.

Nats: "Would you like to taste?"

BUT AT MILLEDGEVILLE'S OUTDOOR FARMER'S MARKET... KEEPING HIS VEGGIES COOL... ISN'T EASY.

Nats, picking up asparagus out of ice.

ESPECIALLY WITH PRODUCE STANDS... SET UP... ON BLACK TOP.

Warren Moore, Hardewick: "Some days are worse than others, but you're here for the customers, so you kinda take what's provided to you."

THAT WHERE MILLEDGEVILLE MAIN STREET... STEPS IN.

Nats: "The farmer's market is currently held in this parking lot."

DIRECTOR... CARLEE SCHULTE... PLANS TO RENOVATE THE LOT... AND BRING IN AN ADDITION.

Carlee Schulte, Main Street Director: "We have this structure behind me that is falling down that just doesn't look good, it's just not a nice thing to look at when you drive into our city."

SHE SAYS... THE CITY PLANS TO BREAK GROUND NEXT MONTH... ON A 78 THOUSAND DOLLAR PAVILLION... EQUIPPED WITH CEILING FANS AND SHADE... FOR FARMERS AND SHOPPERS.

Carlee Schulte: "It just should make a big difference of how people feel about coming to the market. Instead of thinking that they're going to boil, they'll think, 'Okay, well it'll be alright.'"

Nats, getting ice rag.

BUT UNTIL THE MARKET RE-OPENS NEXT MAY BOASTING THE FINISHED RENOVATIONS... THESE FARMERS WILL KEEP IT COOL... ANY WAY THEY CAN.

AMY AUBERT... 13 WMAZ... EYEWITNESS NEWS.
>> SCHULTE SAYS THE CITY IS PROVIDING MOST OF THE WORK... BUT THE GROUP ALSO APPLIED FOR SEVERAL GRANTS... TO COVER THE COST.

FORMER MAYOR C. JACK ELLIS SAYS IF HE'S ELECTED AGAIN... HE WANTS TO BRING SMALL BUSINESSES BACK TO LIFE.
HE SAYS HE WANTS TO OPEN A COMMUNITY CENTER IN THIS CLOSED SUNTRUST BANK BUILDING IN SOUTH MACON.
ELLIS SAYS THE CENTER WOULD OFFER SERVICES SUCH AS A COMPUTER LAB... AND A WINDOW FOR PAYING UTILITY BILLS.
THE FORMER MAYOR SAYS ONE OF HIS MAIN FOCUSES WOULD BE BRINGING SMALL BUSINESSES SUCH AS BANKS... GROCERY STORES AND PHARMACIES TO THE AREA.
"That's why we're here today, to let the people of south Macon know that help is on the way. That when we're in office, we will in fact try and rescue some of these closed buildings that you see here by opening them up and bringing life back, creating jobs, working with small businesses, incentivizing small businesses, putting incentives in place."
ELLIS WILL MEET CURRENT MAYOR ROBERT REICHERT IN THE MAYORAL RUNOFF TWO WEEKS FROM TODAY.
EARLY VOTING FOR THAT RACE AND THE SENATE DISTRICT 26 RACE BETWEEN MIRIAM PARIS AND DAVID LUCAS IS UNDERWAY AT THE BIBB COUNTY BOARD OF ELECTIONS OFFICE ON PIO NONO AVENUE..
EARLY VOTING RUNS THROUGH FRIDAY, AUGUST 12..

THE BIBB COUNTY COMMISSION IS MAKING A PROJECT LIST FOR THE PROPOSED PENNY SALES TAX.
COMMISSIONERS HAVE UNTIL AUGUST 16 TO WORK WITH THE CITY TO DECIDE ON THE PROJECTS THEY'D LIKE THE SPECIAL PURPOSE LOCAL OPTION SALES TAX TO PAY FOR.
TODAY... COMMISSIONERS CONSIDERED WHAT PROJECTS COUNTY VOTERS WOULD LIKE TO SEE... BASED ON A PHONE SURVEY OF 300 VOTERS AND SERIES OF TOWN HALL MEETINGS LAST MONTH.
FOR EXAMPLE... 75 PERCENT OF THOSE SURVEYED WANT COMMISSIONERS TO SAVE MONEY BY RENOVATING THE COURTHOUSE INSTEAD OF BUILDING A NEW ONE.
COMMISSION CHAIRMAN SAM HART SAYS THEY'LL CONSIDER THE COST OF THAT OPTION... ALONG WITH THE REST OF THE PBULIC'S FEEDBACK..
"what they've told us is they'd like recreatoin, they'd like public safety issues that we've talked about, they'd like to see us do something with storm water drainage and several other kinds of things as it relates to making this community... paved roads... "
COMMISSIONERS WILL MEET WITH CITY OFFICIALS TOMORROW MORNING TO GET A ROUGH IDEA OF WHAT PROJECTS WILL GO ON THE BALLOT IN NOVEMBER.

APPLE'S I-POD REVOLUTIONIZED THE MUSIC WORLD... AND TRANSFORMED APPLE FROM A COMPUTER MAKER TO A CONSUMER ELECTRONICS GIANT.
BUT NOW... IS APPLE READY FOR A POST-IPOD WORLD?

ALLAN CHERNOFF TELLS US MORE IN THIS WEEK'S GEEK 13.
<<
APPLE MAY BE SETTING SALES RECORDS WITH ITS I-PAD AND I-PHONE, BUT THE I-POD IS SINKING FAST.
APPLE SOLD JUST 7-1/2 MILLION I-PODS IN ITS MOST RECENT QUARTER -- A 20-PERCENT DROP FROM A YEAR AGO.
THAT'S THE FEWEST SINCE THE FALL OF 2005, WHEN THE I-POD WAS JUST 4 YEARS OLD.
YES, IT'S STILL A MONEY-MAKER FOR APPLE -- SALES FROM THE I-POD ALONE BROUGHT IN 1.3 BILLION DOLLARS OVER THE PAST THREE MONTHS. BUT FOR A PRODUCT LINE THAT REACHED MORE THAN 9 BILLION IN SALES IN 2008, IT SEEMS THAT THE I-POD'S GLORY DAYS ARE DISAPPEARING RAPIDLY IN THE REARVIEW MIRROR.
SO WHAT CAUSED THE I-POD'S DOWNFALL?
ONE FACTOR IS THE TRANSITION AWAY FROM TRADITIONAL HARD DRIVES, TO SOLID-STATE MEMORY, WHICH IS BETTER ABLE TO HANDLE LIFE'S BUMPS AND BRUISES.
IN THE OLD DAYS, IF YOU DROPPED YOUR I-POD, YOU MOST LIKELY NEEDED TO REPLACE IT.
BUT WITH THE ADVENT OF NEWER MODELS LIKE THE I-POD NANO AND TOUCH, CONSUMERS NEED TO REPLACE THEIR DEVICES MUCH LESS FREQUENTLY.
AND OF COURSE, THE I-PHONE ALSO STORES AND PLAYS MUSIC, AS DO RIVAL SMARTPHONES, LIKE GOOGLE'S ANDROID DEVICES.
DESPITE ALL OF THIS, THE I-POD STILL MAINTAINS A 70% SHARE OF THE MP-3 PLAYER MARKET, WHICH MAKES IT DIFFICULT FOR APPLE TO SIMPLY DROP THE I-POD ENTIRELY.
SO WHAT SHOULD APPLE DO?
SOME ANALYSTS SAY IT SHOULD ADD WIRELESS CONNECTIVITY TO THE I-POD CLASSIC OR NANO, WHILE OTHERS SAY LOWERING THE PRICE OF THE I-POD TOUCH AND PHASING OUT OLDER MODELS MIGHT HELP INCREASE SALES.
WHATEVER APPLE DECIDES TO DO WE SHOULD FIND OUT SOON. THE COMPANY TRADITIONALLY REFRESHES ITS I-POD LINEUP IN THE FALL, RIGHT BEFORE THE HOLIDAY SHOPPING SEASON BEGINS.>>
