GOOD EVENING AND THANKS FOR JOINING US..
I'M FRANK MALLOY....THIS IS EYEWITNESS NEWS AT 11.
MACON MAYOR ROBERT REICHERT AND FORMER MAYOR C. JACK ELLIS MEET IN A RUN-OFF ELECTION IN LESS THAN FOUR WEEKS..
TONIGHT THE TWO ARE TALKING ABOUT THEMSELVES AND EACH OTHER..
ELLIS SAYS HIS LEADERSHIP SKILLS AND STATE AND NATIONAL CONNECTIONS ARE TWO REASONS VOTERS SHOULD CHOOSE HIM.
HE ALSO SAYS HIS STRONG EMOTIONAL CONNECTION WITH MACON MAKES HIM THE BEST CHOICE.
"My passion for this city, my compassion for the people, for the majority of people in this city. A lot of people who have been left out and left behind. I have a direct connection with them."
MAYOR REICHERT ALSO TALKED ABOUT HIS LEADERSHIP SKILLS AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS.
HE ALSO TALKED ABOUT THE STABILITY HE'S BROUGHT TO CITY HALL.
" I've been a steady hand at the wheel during rough and turbulent times. So if people are looking for stability, and moving the city in the right direction, and continuing to move us in tehr ight direction, they want to keep a good thing goign they want to elect Robert Reichert"
REICHERT ALSO SAID ONE OF HIS GOALS AS MAYOR W TO RESTORE DIGNITY AND INTEGRITY TO CITY HALL.
HE SAYS ELLIS' TIME IN OFFICE HURT MACON'S IMAGE.
"I think it hurt it. I really do, I don't think Mayor Ellis himself recognises and realizes the extent that he embarrassed himself and he embarrassed the city of Macon."
"That's not true. That's a republican lie. That's their line. That has nothing to do with reality, I brought over a hundred million dollars into this community while I was mayor. Is that an embarrassment?"
REICHERT WON 48 PERCENT OF THE VOTE IN TUESDAY'S DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY....ELLIS 38 PERCENT.
THE RUNOFF ELECTION WILL BE HELD AUGUST 16TH.

Josh Rogers, Historic Macon Foundation: "The school board has done an excellent job of maintaining this facility as long as it's been in use, so we're really lucky that we've got an intact, secure building. The bad thing is, once a building becomes vacant, it's open to vandalism, and simple things like roof leaks can cause major damage and destroy the structures of the building in a really short period of time. So it's incredibly important that we move quickly to find someone that wants to reuse this building for an appropriate use that's going to preserve it for the next generation."
ROGERS SAYS HE HOPES TO GET THE BUILDING ON THE NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES SOON.
HE SAYS... THEY'RE OPEN TO IDEAS ON WHAT TO DO WITH THE BUILDING.
