GOOD EVENING AND THANKS FOR JOINING US..
I'M FRANK MALLOY..
THIS IS EYEWITNESS NEWS AT 11..
LEAH JOHNSON IS ON MATERNITY LEAVE..

FORMER FIRST LADY BETTY FORD HAS DIED.
SHE PASSED AWAY IN HER CALIFORNIA HOME THIS AFTERNOON.
SANDRA HUGHES TAKES A LOOK AT HER LIFE... WHICH WAS FILLED WITH PLENTY OF HIGHS AND LOWS.
<<

(TAKE PKG)
Script:
(:28)
Betty Bloomer Ford never expected to become First lady...but she was thrust
into the role when Richard Nixon resigned in disgrace. She had been raised in
Grand Rapids, Michigan, spent time in New York City a student of modern dance
pioneer Martha Graham, modeled and then married ...twice...the second time to
a young lawyer just entering politics. Twenty-eight years were spent living
in Washington as Congressman Gerald Ford's wife, raising their four children.

Super: August, 1974
Nat Sot...Ford takes oath of office..."So help me God" "Congratulations Mr.
President"

(:10)
Just weeks after her husband was sworn in as the 38th president of the United
States in the wake of the Watergate scandal, the new First Lady found out she
had breast cancer and underwent a mastectomy.

Super: October, 2000
SOT: Betty Ford:
It came as a terrible shock, of course, to our family and to me. Breast
cancer had never entered my mind. 1:00:00

(:08)
At a time when cancer was spoken of in whispers, Betty Ford's forthright
discusion of the subject was credited with saving thousands of lives.

SOT: Betty Ford
I'd always think, well, When I go down those stairs with my husband, they're
probably wondering, "Now which side did she say it was?" (she laughs) 1:01:12

(:17)
In the two and half years she spent as First Lady, she was candid about her
opinions and didn't shrink from controversy. Mrs. Ford favored the Equal
Rights amendment, was pro-choice, revealed she had seen a psychiatrist and
admitted she would probably try marijuana if she were a teenager.

(:15)
Suffering from the stess of her public role and the after effects of her
illness, Mrs. Ford became hooked on painkilling drugs and alcohol. After
leaving the White House, yet still very much in the public eye, she entered a
California hospital to kick the habits.

Super: January, 2003
SOT: Betty Ford
I was very comfortable with going public with my addiction and going into
treatment. I had been very public about breast cancer and that had helped a
lot of people. 23:10:30

(:17)
Afterwards, she helped found the Betty Ford Treatment Center... one of
America's first prominent facilities devoted to drug and alchohol abuse
recovery. Mrs. Ford served as its chairman and spent three or four days a
week counselling patients there...work she said contributed to her own
sobriety.

SOT: Betty Ford
I've always been kinda open about my life, probably, sometimes, too much so.
1:03:47

(:21)
But Betty Ford's openess turned out to be her greatest gift to her country.
Her frail presence at the funral services for her husband of 58 years,
served as a poignant reminder of the woman whose reigh as First Lady, while
brief and totally unexpected, was remarkable.

IT'S BEEN TEN YEARS SINCE CONSTRUCTION ON THE NEW TUBMAN MUSEUM BEGAN... AND IT HAS YET TO OPEN IT'S DOORS.
ELEANOR LISSITZYN TAKES YOU INSIDE THE DOWNTOWN LANDMARK TO SHOW YOU WHAT STILL NEEDS TO BE DONE... AND ONE MAN'S VISION FOR HOW TO GET THERE.
WHEN PEOPLE GET A SNEAK A PEAK INSIDE THE UNFINISHED MUSEUM'S GATES...

TUBMAN DIRECTOR ANDY AMBROSE SAYS...
nat of lock
IT ALWAYS UNLOCKS THE SAME REACTION.
"It's alway oh my gosh this is incredible I've never seen anything like this."
BUT IT TAKES SOME IMAGINATION TO SEE IT THROUGH HIS EYES
"It's going to be so different, so incredible so engaging."
"There will be a museum store here... and a resources center here."
THOSE BIG PLANS COME WITH A BIG PRICE TAG... HE SAYS THEY NEED TWO AND A HALF MILLION DOLLARS TO GET THE MUSEUM FINISHED... AND OPEN.
EVERY DETAIL OF THE TUBMAN WAS PLANNED OUT...
'The color of the museum, it's kind of yellow. Well this is a reference edo or edo, it's a clay of West Africa."
"The huge copper dome you see is evocative of a chieftiens headdress."
EVERY DETAIL.... EXCEPT THE FINANCES.
"They first started building the Tubman in 2001 with $12.5 of the $21 million dollars they'd need to complete it.
Then, Ambrose says, 911 hit. The uncertainty of the times meant donations tried up. He says that coupled with a rise in material and labor costs meant the museum soon ran out of CASH. In the fall of 2005 they stoped construction and locked the gates."
AMBROSE ENVISIONS CREATING THE ANCHOR OF THE DOWNTOWN MUSEUM DISTRICT...
AND HE SAYS TO GET THE CASH TO DO IT - THE SPLOST IS THEIR BEST BET.
"This is something that's necessary. It really is an element of the character of Macon. It's what's going to make Macon grow and be successful, it's what's going to sustain the downtown."
IF THEY GET MONEY... HE SAYS WITHIN TWO YEARS.... HE COULD BE OPENING THIS DOOR... TO THE TUBMAN AND THE MUSEUM DISTRICT'S FUTURE.
STDEARLIER THIS WEEK AMBROSE WENT BEFORE MACON CITY COUNCIL TO PITCH THE IDEA OF PUTTING THE TUBMAN ON THE SPLOST.
HE SAYS DURING THE CITY AND COUNTY LISTENING SESSIONS... IT FREQUENTLY CAME UP AS ONE OF THE PUBLIC'S TOP PRIORITIES.
BUT THE COUNTY DECIDES ON SPLOST PROJECTS... AND THEY HAVEN'T COME UP WITH A FINAL LIST.
CITY AND COUNTY OFFICIALS ARE EXPECTED TO HOLD A MEETING LATER THIS MONTH TO MAKE THOSE DECISIONS.

ROBERT BROWN FIELDED A QUESTION ABOUT UNPAID TAXES AND GARBAGE FEES DURING LAST NIGHT'S MAYORAL DEBATE IN THE 13WMAZ STUDIO'S..
MORE THAN FOURTEEN HUNDRED DOLLARS ARE OWED ON THE PROPERTY AT 2-1-8 FOREST AVENUE WHICH BROWN ONCE OWNED.
BUT BROWN SAYS BRENDA BRADLEY GAVE HIM THE PROPERTY.
Robert Brown, Democratic Mayoral Candidate: For reasons that are personal, she had deeded that property to me. Now she has requested that the property be deeded back to her, and we have done that.
PROPERTY TAX RECORDS SHOW BROWN DEEDED THE PROPERTY BACK TO BRADLEY TWO WEEKS AGO FOR A DOLLAR. IT HAPPENED TWO DAYS AFTER WE FIRST REPORTED THE STORY.
BROWN SAYS HE NEVER OWED THE TAXES BECAUSE BRADLEY AGREED TO PAY THEM.
Robert Brown, Democratic Mayoral Candidate: I want to make it clear. I have not abdicated on my responsibilities as far as taxes are concerned. If you would check the records carefully, you would see that tax bill for that property went directly to that address. All of my other tax bills came directly to me.
RECORDS CONFIRM THE PAST DUE TAX AND GARBAGE BILLS WENT TO THE FOREST AVENUE ADDRESS.. BROWN'S OTHER TAX BILLS WENT TO HIS OFFICE ON NEW STREET.
EARLIER.. BRADLEY TOLD 13WMAZ THAT SHE HAD AGREED TO PAY THE TAX AND GARBAGE FEES.. BUT HAD FALLEN BEHIND BECAUSE OF TOUGH ECONOMIC TIMES.
