HAPPY FATHER'S DAY.
IN LESS THAN TWO WEEKS... GEORGIA WILL CHANGE ITS REQUIREMENTS FOR KEEPING CHILDREN BUCKLED UP IN THE CAR.
GEORGIA LAWMAKERS PASSED THE NEW RULES IN MARCH... AND GOVERNOR NATHAN DEAL SIGNED THEM LAST MONTH.
THE NEW LAW IS AIMED AT KEEPING YOUR CHILD SAFE WHILE YOU'RE BEHIND THE WHEEL.
LAUREN DISPIRITO HAS THE DETAILS.
CENTERVILLE FIRE CHIEF JASON JONES HELPS PEOPLE MAKE SURE THEIR CHILDREN ARE SAFELY BUCKLED IN... WHEN THEY RIDE IN THE CAR.
Nats Jones "There are a couple different kinds of seats, this right here is a low back booster."
NEXT MONTH... THE CERTIFIED CAR SEAT TECHNICIAN SAYS A NEW BOOSTER SEAT LAW WILL MAKE KIDS TRAVELING ON GEORGIA ROADS... SAFER.
STARTING JULY FIRST...
THE STATE RAISES THE AGE LIMIT FOR CHILDREN TO SIT IN CAR BOOSTER SEATS... FROM SIX... TO EIGHT.
THAT MEANS.. WITH A FEW EXCEPTIONS... KIDS MUST RIDE IN A BOOSTER SEAT.. IN THE BACKSEAT... UNTIL THEIR 8TH BIRTHDAY.
IF DRIVERS GET CAUGHT DISOBEYING THE LAW.. THEY COULD FACE FINES UP TO FIFTY DOLLARS... AND GET A POINT ADDED TO THEIR LICENSE.
Jason Jones, Centerville Fire Department, Fire Chief: "vehicles are designed for adults, and if a child can't properly fit in the vehicle seat they need to be in some type of child restraint system"
YOU CAN CHOOSE FROM A HIGH BACK SEAT... THAT JONES SAYS SUPPORTS A CHILD'S HEAD... OR A LOW BACK BOOSTER SEAT.
Nats Jones "this boosts them up so the seat belt in the car fits them properly across the shoulder."
THE CHANGE AFFECTS PEOPLE WHO DRIVE PASSENGER VEHICLES... INCLUDING VANS AND PICK UP TRUCKS.
William Stewart, Macon: "I think it's a good thing for the kids."
Pamela Chapman, Macon: adults bounce around in cars when we get in accidents and we get hurt enough children don't need to have that risk, they don't need to get damaged that way"
JONES HOPES THE NEW LAW SAVES LIVES.
Jason Jones, Centerville Fire Department, Fire Chief: "the longer that children stay in a seat the safer they are
