GOOD EVENING AND THANKS FOR JOINING US..
I'M FRANK MALLOY..
AND I'M LEAH JOHNSON..THIS IS EYEWITNESS NEWS AT 11.\

TONIGHT... PEOPLE IN MACON AND BIBB COUNTY HAD A CHANCE TO SHARE THEIR IDEAS ON HOW TO USE A NEW PROPOSED SPLOST WITH CITY AND COUNTY LEADERS..
MAYOR ROBERT REICHERT AND COMMISSION CHAIRMAN SAM HART MADE THE LAST STOP ON THEIR LISTENING TOUR AT THE BIBB COUNTY COURTHOUSE.
ABOUT 30 PEOPLE CAME TO SHARE THEIR IDEAS FOR HOW TO USE THE MONEY FROM THE PROPOSED SPLOST.
BIBB COUNTY COMMISSION CHAIRMAN SAM HART SAYS SOME OF THE SUGGESTIONS THEY HEARD DURING THE TOUR HAD A COMMON THEME.
"Public safety. People are concerned about public safety and they want to make sure again that the hundred megahertz radio is put in place so that people can communicate. But we also heard about things like fire stations."
CITY AND COUNTY LEADERS PLAN TO PUT THE SPLOST ON THE BALLOT FOR THE NOVEMBER ELECTION.

GEORGIA'S NEW ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION LAW IS ALREADY HAVING A DRAMATIC EFFECT ON THE STATE'S BIGGEST INDUSTRY... AGRICULTURE.
GOVERNOR NATHAN DEAL SIGNED THE BILL LAST MONTH... AND THE A-C-L-U FILED A LAWSUIT TO TRY TO STOP IT.
THEN... SOME FARMERS REPORTED THAT NEARLY HALF THEIR WORKERS WEREN'T SHOWING UP.
NOW... GOVERNOR DEAL IS PROPOSING PUTTING FORMER CONVICTS TO WORK ON THE FARMS.
DOUG RICHARDS WITH OUR SISTER STATION W-X-I-A IN ATLANTA HAS THE STORY.
THE STATE HAS ASKED THE COURT TO TOSS OUT THE A-C-L-U'S LAWSUIT AGAINST THE IMMIGRATION LAW.
THAT LAW IS SCHEDULED TO TAKE EFFECT JULY FIRST.

MAYORAL CANDIDATE C. JACK ELLIS WANTS TO MARK MACON'S BI-CENTENNIAL....TWELVE YEARS FROM NOW...BY REDEVELOPING EAST MACON.
THE FORMER MAYOR MADE THE ANNOUNCEMENT IN EAST MACON.
ELLIS PROPOSED USING FEDERAL GRANT MONEY TO DEMOLISH VACANT AND RUNDOWN HOUSES IN THE AREA.. AND REPLACE THEM WITH NEW HOMES LIKE THOSE HE HELPED DEVELOP IN BEALL'S HILL.
HE SAYS THE CITY'S BIRTHPLACE NEEDS REFRESHING.
C. Jack Ellis, Democratic Mayoral Candidate: We don't have a decent restaruant where people on this side of the river can go and have a decent meal. So that would be part of the mix, the economic development, commercial development, housing development, and of course getting ready for the bi-centennial.
ELLIS IS ONE OF FOUR DEMOCRATS SEEKING THE MAYOR'S SEAT... WHICH HE HELD FROM 19-99 TO 20-07.
THE OTHERS ARE FORMER FIREFIGHTER PAUL BRONSON.. FORMER STATE SENATOR ROBERT BROWN.. AND MAYOR ROBERT REICHERT.
THEY MEET IN THE JULY 19TH PRIMARY.

SEVENTY YEARS AGO TODAY MACON'S FOREFATHERS RECEIVED A TELEGRAM WITH NEWS THAT WOULD CHANGE THE FUTURE OF THE REGION.
THE CITY OF WELLSTON - JUST SOUTH OF MACON - WOULD SOON BE HOME TO AN AIR SERVICE DEPOT FOR THE ARMY...
FAST FORWARD SEVEN DECADES... AND TODAY THAT CITY IS WARNER ROBINS... HOME TO THE LARGEST SINGLE EMPLOYER IN GEORGIA... ROBINS AIR FORCE BASE.
AS ELEANOR LISSITZYN SHOWS US... ABOUT FIVE HUNDRED PEOPLE CAME OUT TONIGHT TO CELEBRATE THE BASE'S BIRTHDAY AND IT'S IMPACT ON THE AREA.
ACCORDING TO BASE OFFICIALS... ROBINS EMPLOYEES OVER TWENTY-SIX THOUSAND PEOPLE FROM TWENTY EIGHT COUNTIES.

SOME VOLUNTEERS SPENT THE AFTERNOON UNLOADING... CLEANING... AND HAULING ANTIQUES INTO THEIR NEW HOME.
AS AMY AUBERT SHOWS YOU... THE 1800'S-ERA PIECES... WERE DONATED TO THE BROWN-STETSON-SANFORD HOUSE IN MILLEDGEVILLE... BY A FAMILY TRAVELING THROUGH.

Nats, getting furniture out of truck

VOLUNTEERS AT THE BROWN-STETSON-SANFORD HOUSE GOT TO WORK...

Nats, putting drawer together

...UNLOADING NEARLY 20 PIECES OF FURNITURE... FROM THE EARLY 1800'S.

Nats, walking upfront steps

BUT IT WASN'T ANY ORDINARY MOVE-IN DAY.

Amy Wright, Executive Director GA Old Capital Museum: "It was like Christmas."

A HOLIDAY... THAT GEORGIA'S OLD CAPITAL MUSEUM'S DIRECTOR... AMY WRIGHT... SAYS CAME SIX MONTHS EARLY.

Nats, carrying furniture

SHE SAYS... ROB AND JUDY STEINAU VISITED MILLEDGEVILLE IN APRIL... DAYS LATER... THEY OFFERED THEIR ANTIQUE COLLECTION... OF FURNITURE... ORIENTAL RUGS... AND BOWLS.

Amy Wright: "With four men and a truck, we picked up the antiques and brought them here to Milledgeville, and today, we have brought them home."

WRIGHT SAYS THE COUPLE CONTACTED HER ABOUT THE 1800'S ERA PIECES... SOME OF THEM BELIEVED TO BE MADE IN CENTRAL GEORGIA... AND DONATED THEM TO THE MUSEUM.

AND ACCORDING TO APPRAISER RAY OLIVIER...

Nats, "you'll note the inside..."

FOR AN ANTEBELLAM HOME... THEY'RE A PERFECT FIT.

Nats, pushing drawer in

Ray Olivier, Appriaser: "This is typical as what you would see in kitchens, or storage rooms, pantry areas."

OLIVIER ESTIMATES BETWEEN 5 AND 10 THOUSAND DOLLARS... WORTH OF DONATIONS.

NOT ALL OF THAT... HE SAYS... IS MADE OF WOOD.

Amy Wright: "The candlesticks that you see on top of the table are also unique because they're made from bells, from brass bells."

ARMFULS OF DONATIONS... WRIGHT SAYS... HELP TO TELL THE STORY... OF A FAMILY... WHO ONCE LIVED HERE.

Nats, shutting truck door.
