A CONVICTED MURDERER WHO ESCAPED FROM HANCOCK STATE PRISON THIS WEEKEND HAS BEEN RECAPTURED.
THAT'S ACCORDING TO GWENDOLYN HOGAN WITH THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS.
THE HANCOCK COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE SAYS OFFICERS FOUND JENKINS ON HIGHWAY 22 ABOUT FIVE MILES FROM SPARTA AROUND 7:30 TONIGHT.
JENKINS ESCAPED FROM THE STATE PRISON IN SPARTA AROUND 8 O'CLOCK SUNDAY NIGHT.
DEPUTIES SAID JENKINS DID NOT RESIST ARREST WHEN THEY FOUND HIM TONIGHT..
AFTER SEVERAL YEARS OF PUSHING TO GET MORE POLICE IN THE VILLAGE GREEN AREA... MACON CITY COUNCILMAN ED DEFORE'S IDEA TO GET A POLICE SUB-STATION IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD IS CLOSER TO BECOMING A REALITY.
AS ELEANOR LISSITZYN EXPLAINS... HE SAYS HE HOPES MORE POLICE WILL MEAN LESS CRIME... AND BRING SECURITY TO A NEIGHBORHOOD IN TROUBLE.
THE MACON CITY COUNCIL PUBLIC SAFTEY COMMITTEE VOTED MONDAY NIGHT TO ASK THE MAYOR TO CONSIDER PUTTING A POLICE SUBSTATION IN THE VILLAGE GREEN AREA.
"It is one of our high crime areas."
WHEN COUNCILMAN ED DEFORE INTRODUCED THE IDEA TO COUNCIL LAST WEEK... HE SAID HE WAS GLAD TO SEE TWO YEARS OF WORK BECOMING A REALITY.
"We're looking out for those people, they're poor people, handicapped people, everthing. We;re going to look out for bloominfield and southwest Macon."
MACON POLICE CHIEF MIKE BURNS SAYS THERE IS AT LEAST ONE OFFICER PATROLING THE NEIGHBORHOOD AT ANY TIME... BUT GREATER VISIBILITY IS KEY.
"One thing about Village Green, it's sort of out of the way as far as partrol goes. By having a presence down there I think it's gonna help the community, not only Village Green but the whole Bloomfield area."
CRIME STATISTICS COMPILED BY THE MIDDLE GEORGIA REGIONAL COMMISSION SHOWED THAT OF SIXTEEN POLICE PATROL ZONES IN MACON... VILLAGE GREEN RANKED FOURTH FOR AGGRAVATED ASSAULTS.. THIRD FOR RESIDENTIAL BURGLARIES... AND FIFTH FOR AUTO THEFTS...
Stand up."The police substation would be located in this building on Bloomfield way off Bloomfield Road. It already houses Americorps, who would share it with police. Chief Burns says if the plan is approved a total of six police officers would use this bulding as their base of operations."
DEFORE SAYS IT'S SOMETHING THE AREA HAS NEEDED FOR YEARS.
"The people are scared to even go out to their mailboxes at times."
AND HE SAYS IT CAN'T COME A MOMENT TO SOON.
STD CHIEF BURNS SAID THEY STILL NEED TO WORK OUT AN AGREEMENT WITH THE MACON HOUSING AUTHORITY TO RENT THE PROPERTY BEFORE THEY CAN SET UP A SUB-STATION.
BUT HE SAYS IF ALL GOES WELL - POLICE COULD GET IN THERE AS SOON AS NEXT WEEK.
HEALTH OFFICIALS ARE INVESTIGATING AFTER AN EMPLOYEE AT A BONAIRE VIETNAMESE RESTAURANT WAS DIAGNoSED WITH TUBERCULOSIS.
CANDACE ADORKA SPOKE WITH THE MANAGER....AND A STATE HEALTH DIRECTOR... WHO SAYS THERE WAS NO DANGER TO CUSTOMERS.
SAIGON NOODLE HOUSE MANAGER MINH DOAN SAYS ONE OF HER TOP WAITRESSES SHOWED NO SIGNS OF ILLNESS AT WORK. NOW...THE WAITRESS HAS BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH TUBERCULOSIS.
Doan: "She called in she said she don't feel good. Maybe she off a couple days. She went to visit a doctor. And after that i don't see her come back."
DOAN FOUND OUT SHE WAS EXPOSED TO T-B... IN A LETTER FROM THE HOUSTON COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT.
SHE SAYS THEY ASSURED HER THERE WAS NO RISK TO HER CUSTOMERS.
Doan: "We don't want to spread some disease ot customers. No way I don't wan't to. But because the health department told us we OK that's why we're still open. But if not I need to close right away."
THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT GAVE ALL THE EMPLOYEES AT SAIGON NOODLE HOUSE A SKIN TEST.
Doan: "When they come here, they put the needle on everybody's skin and they say they will come back about 2 days to measure the swelling."
DOCTOR DAVID HARVEY... THE NORTH CENTRAL HEALTH DISTRICT DIRECTOR... SAYS TESTS SHOWED THAT 9 EMPLOYEES HAD BEEN EXPOSED TO T-B...SOMETIME IN THEIR LIVES., ALL NINE GOT CHEST EX-RAYS.
Harvey: "We've picked up no active cases. All these chest exrays are negative. We're still waiting on three that had exrays and we just don't have the results back."
BUT HARVEY SAYS THERE IS NO RISK TO CUSTOMERS BECAUSE NONE OF THE EMPLOYEES SHOWED SYMPTOMS... WHICH MEANS THEY'RE NOT CONTAGEOUS.
Harvey: "TB is not a food-borne disease. You're not going to get it from eating this food this lady serves or anyone else serves. TB is contagious by aerosol, by breathing."
DOAN SAYS SHE WAS WORRIED WHEN HER SKIN TEST SHOWED SHE'D BEEN EXPOSED TO T-B.
HARVEY SAYS THAT'S NORMAL FOR PEOPLE FROM COUNTRIES LIKE VIETNAM... WHERE T-B IS RAMPANT.
DOAN SAYS SHE WAS RELIEVED WHEN SHE HEARD THE SAME THING FROM HER DAUGHTER... WHO IS A PHYSICIAN'S ASSISNT.
Doan: "She said don't worry that's not irregular."
CANDACE ADORKA... 13WMAZ EYEWITNESS NEWS.
>> HARVEY SAYS T-B IS RARE IN THE U-S.
ONLY TWO OUT OF 100 THOUSAND PEOPLE GET THE DIAGNOSIS.
BUT IT'S A LOT MORE COMMON IN OTHER COUNTRIES LIKE VIETNAM WHERE 100 OUT OF 100 THOUSAND PEOPLE ARE DIAGNOSED WITH T-B.
