TAXES AND FEES FOR WARNER ROBINS TAXPAYERS WILL GO UP JULY FIRST.
BUT BEFORE COUNCIL MEMBERS VOTE IN FAVOR OF THE INCREASES... SOME SAY THE MAYOR NEEDS TO SLASH MORE OF HIS OWN BUDGET.
LORRA LYNCH EXPLAINS BOTH SIDES OF THE ISSUE.
<<nats- shaheen
DURING A THURSDAY EVENING WORK SESSION... COUNCIL MEMBERS DIDN'T ASK QUESTIONS ABOUT MAYOR CHUCK SHAHEEN'S 2012 BUDGET .... CHOOSING TO DELAY AN OPEN DISCUSSION UNTIL MONDAY'S FULL COUNCIL MEETING.
Mike Daley: (6:00) "It might be an interesting meeting."
COUNCIL MEMBER MIKE DALEY SAID HE NEEDED MORE TIME TO REVIEW SHAHEEN'S BUDGET CHANGES... REVISIONS THAT BALANCED IT... AFTER A FIRST DRAFT SHOWED THE CITY 900-THOUSAND IN THE RED.
nats- shaheen
IN THE SECOND DRAFT... SHAHEEN CUT EVERY DEPARTMENT'S TRAVEL EXPENSES BY 10-PERCENT... TRIMMED THE FIRE DEPARTMENT BY ABOUT 72-HUNDRED DOLLARS AND THE POLICE DEPARTMENT BY 212-THOUSAND.
Chuck Shaheen: (10:10) "Were cutting it back, but were not cutting anything that would provide better safety for the citizens of Warner Robins."
COUNCIL MEMBER BOB WILBANKS SAYS BEFORE CUTTING PUBLIC SAFETY... SHAHEEN SHOULD SHEAR EXPENSES ON HIS OWN OFFICE.
WILBANKS SAYS THAT BUDGET INCREASED BY 115-THOUSAND DOLLARS IN TWO YEARS.
Bob Wilbanks: (16:00) "Mayor Walker, for his last budget in office, was 231,000. Chuck Shaheen's is 346,000."
Chuck Shaheen: (12:46) "You got a mayor of a town of 70,000 people, 525 employees. I had one person. We did add another person last year, so I guess that's why it looked like it increased. I did request a car."
THE MAYOR BUDGETED ABOUT 37-THOUSAND FOR THAT...
Chuck Shaheen: (10:50) "It needs to be there. Every department head has a vehicle."
Mike Daley: "I think the mayor deserves a vehicle, but I don't know of the timings right for that now."
