TONIGHT'S TOP STORY... TWO CHILDREN WENT TO THE HOSPITAL AFTER A MINIVAN HIT A HOUSTON COUNTY DEPUTY'S CAR THIS AFTERNOON.
THE ACCIDENT HAPPENED AROUND 2 P.M. JUST SOUTH OF PERRY.
THE OFFICER'S CAR WAS PARKED IN THE EMERGENCY LANE... WHEN HOUSTON COUNTY LIEUTENANT M-J STOKES SAYS THE MINIVAN'S- DRIVER MAY HAVE FALLEN ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL.
THE MINIVAN HIT THE OFFICER'S CAR FROM BEHIND... AND ROLLED OVER INTO A DITCH.
THE OFFICER AND DRIVER WEREN'T SERIOUSLY INJURED.
STOKES SAYS TWO CHILDREN ARE BEING TREATED AT THE MEDICAL CENTER OF CENTRAL GEORGIA.
HE SAYS THEIR INJURIES ARE NOT LIFE THREATENING

STATE REPRESENTATIVE DAVID LUCAS SAYS HE'S DOING WELL AFTER SUFFERING A HEART ATTACK SUNDAY NIGHT.
THE 61-YEAR-OLD LUCAS SAYS DOCTORS OPERATED ON HIM TO PUT TWO STENTS INTO CLOGGED ARTERIES.
LUCAS SAYS HE FEELS LUCKY TO BE ALIVE AFTER DOCTORS TOLD HIM A MAJOR ARTERY WAS OVER NINETY PERCENT BLOCKED.
HE IS NOW RECOVERING AT THE MEDICAL CENTER OF CENTRAL GEORGIA
DAVID'S WIFE ELAINE LUCAS SAYS... HE WAS AT HIS ANNUAL SOUL JAM CONCERT AT HENDERSON STADIUM IN MACON... WHEN HE BEGAN SUFFERING FROM HEAT EXHAUSTION AND DEHYDRATION.
DAVID LUCAS SAYS HE EXPECTS TO BE RELEASED SOMETIME LATER THIS WEEK.
REPRESENTATIVE LUCAS RECENTLY ANNOUNCED PLANS TO RUN FOR ROBERT BROWN'S STATE SENATE SEAT WHEN BROWN STEPS DOWN TO RUN FOR MAYOR OF MACON.

IT WAS A HOT ONE TODAY.... BUT THE HEAT DIDN'T STOP PEOPLE FROM ENJOYING THEIR DAY OFF AT LAKE TOBESOFKEE.

SHAW SAYS HER FAMILY MEMBERS HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED A HEAT STROKE BECAUSE SHE MAKES SURE TO BRING A LOT OF WATER AND JUICE.
Yvonne Shaw, Macon: "Just to keep ourselves hydrated you know, because once we're in the sun, you're sweating a lot so you use a lot of water, so you need to put that back in. So we make sure we have a whole case of water."
OTHERS AREN'T AS PREPARED FOR THE HEAT...
THE CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL SAYS THERE ARE DIFFERENT DEGREES OF HEAT STRESS.
HEAT STROKE HAPPENS WHEN THE BODY BECOMES UNABLE TO CONTROL ITS TEMPERATURE... THE C-DC SAYS THE BODY TEMPERATURE CAN RISE TO 106 OR HIGHER WITHIN 10 TO 15 MINUTES.
IT SAYS HEAT EXHAUSTION IS THE BODY'S RESPONSE TO AN EXCESSIVE LOSS OF THE WATER AND SALT, USUALLY THROUGH EXCESSIVE SWEATING.
Jennifer Moulliet "According to Lake Tobesofkee Recreation Director they haven't seen many heat exhaustion cases yet this year but it is still early and in the past they've seen it happen more to women than in men."
Doug Furney, Director of Recreation at Lake Tobesofkee: "They will lay out in the heat more than the men will and they get overheated and not realize it and when they stand up the blood will rush to their head or away from their head and they'll pass out."
