MACON MAYOR ROBERT REICHERT AND BIBB COUNTY COMMISSION CHAIRMAN SAM HART SAY THEY WANT TO GET YOUR THOUGHTS ON HOW TO SPEND MONEY GENERATED BY A PROPOSED PENNY SALES TAX..
THEY STARTED A TOWN-HALL STYLE LISTENING TOUR TONIGHT.
AS CANDACE ADORKA FOUND OUT... THE FIRST STOP DREW PEOPLE WITH ALL TYPES OF IDEAS..

AT A PUBLIC MEETING ABOUT HOW TO SPEND A PROPOSED SPLOST... LEE LANIER HAD ONE MESSAGE. 
"We're not ready to pay for more taxes, americans are suffering accross this country.... from higher gas prices and higher grocery prices....
HE WAS ONE OF DOZENS WHO CROWDED INTO THE BLEACHERS AT EAST MACON TO GIVE THEIR TWO CENTS ABOUT A ONE CENT SALES TAX INCREASE.

SEVERAL PEOPLE SOPKE OUT IN FAVOR OF BETTER RECREATIONAL FACILITIES IN MACON... OTHERS TALKED ABOUT INFRASTRUCTURE IMPROVEMENTS AND REVAMPING THE ANIMAL SHELTER.
LANIER SAYS PEOPLE RAISED VALID CONCERNS... BUT HE DOESN'T THINK GOVERNMENT IS EFFICIENT ENOUGH TO ADDRESS THEM. 
"We're seeing so much waste and excessive spending in government on things that do not affect the people... i think we're discontent and dissatisfied with those that are leading our country."  
LARRY BUNGE (bungee) SUGGESTED SPENDING SPLOST MONEY ON LOCAL ATTRACTIONS.
"georgia musuc hall of fame sports hall of fame."
HE SAYS THAT'S THE BEST WAY TO FUND THE TAX.
"if you don't have people coming into macon for recreational purposes and for other reasons, the citzens of macon will be paying for the SPLOST." OFFICALS KEPT TRACK OF THE POINTS PEOPLE RAISED... AND PEOPLE WHO ATTENDED COULD SHOW SUPPORT FOR THE PROJECTS WITH A GREEN DOT.
LANIER SAYS THERE SHOULD HAVE BEEN MORE DOTS. 
"i think more people need to show up to these events and let their voices be heard or else the changes that are necessary to take place are not gonna be accomplished.

     BALDWIN COUNTY'S DISTRICT ATTORNEY SAYS HIS OFFICE DOESN'T PLAN TO FILE CHARGES IN AN ALLEGED RAPE AT OAK HILL MIDDLE SCHOOL LAST MONTH.
AN INCIDENT REPORT SAID A 13-YEAR-OLD OAK HILL MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENT WAS GOING TO A GLEE CLUB MEETING WHEN SHE REALIZED SHE FORGOT HER BOOK BAG. 
THE REPORT SAID SHE WENT INTO THE BAND ROOM... WHERE SHE SAID A 14-YEAR-OLD BOY AT OAK HILL RAPED HER.
        D-A FRED BRIGHT SAYS BOTH STUDENTS ADMITTED TO HAVING SEXUAL CONTACT.
       HE SAYS OTHER STUDENTS TOLD INVESTIGATORS THAT THE GIRL REGRETTED LETTING THE BOY TALK HER INTO SEX.
      BRIGHT SAYS HIS OFFICE DOESN'T PLAN TO FILE CHARGES... AND FEELS THAT ANY PUNISHMENT FOR THE INCIDENT SHOULD BE HANDLED BY SCHOOL LEADERS..


ON BIBB COUNTY'S LAST DAY OF CLASS... THE SUPERINTENDENT URGED THE COMMUNITY NOT TO LOSE MOMENTUM IN IMPROVING ITS SCHOOLS.
AT THE SCHOOL BOARD'S MONTHLY MEETING TONIGHT.. ROMAIN DALLEMAND UPDATED MEMBERS ON HIS PROGRESS SINCE TAKING OVER THE DISTRICT'S JOB THIS WINTER.
HE SAYS HE'S NARROWED DOWN CANDIDATES FOR NEW LEADERSHIP JOBS... TALKED WITH STAFF AND STUDENTS AT EVERY SCHOOL... AND STARTED A SUMMER READING INITIATIVE.
HE SAYS HE LEARNED THE MOST BY LISTENING TO EDUCATORS' FRUSTRATIONS AND CONCERNS DURING SCHOOL VISITS.

Lauren DiSpirito, Eyewitness News: "Why is that?"
Romain Dallemand, Superintendent: because of some of the pressing concerns and needs that we have like technology for example is a major concern."
DALLEMAND SAYS MORE THAN 400 PEOPLE APPLIED FOR NEW CENTRAL OFFICE JOBS AFTER HE ELIMINATED 16... THEN CREATED 6 NEW JOBS EARLIER THIS YEAR.


AND WITH SCHOOL OUT FOR THE SUMMER... HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS ARE GETTING READY FOR THEIR BIG DAY.

THE STUDENTS WALKED SIDE BY SIDE DOWN THE AISLE TO THEIR SPORTS.
NORTHEAST HIGH SCHOOL ALSO PRACTICED TODAY....AND STUDENTS THERE SAY THEY'RE READY TO END ONE JOURNEY...AND BEGIN A NEW ONE.

CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL CELEBRATED ONE OF ITS OWN ON THIS LAST DAY OF SCHOOL.
SENIOR THELRON (THEL-RON) PLEAS (PLESS) IS THE PROUD WINNER OF THE BILL GATES MILLENNIUM SCHOLARSHIP.
WE TALKED WITH HIM AND HIS TEACHERS  ABOUT HIS ACCOMPLISHMENT.
"We knew that he had filled out applications and we were sure that he would win but just that confirmation just blew our minds."


Central High School Teacher Wylene Dickey is talking about Thelron Pless' scholarship win. She and school counselor Ann Milline say they can't think of anyone more deserving... 


"It was a joyous occassion for all of us to know that out of 23 thousand, he was selected as one of the students to get the Gates Millenium."


Pless not only makes the grade when it comes to school...he spends time working with the school district's technology department...
When he's not doing that... he's working with charities or writing, directing and producing plays. He says all of his accomplishments are thanks to others who have helped him along the way.


"Everyone is my hero because I would not be where I am today if somebody didn't give me a chance at life.  If somebody didn't give me a chance to do this or to do that or didn't push me or didn't say here, here's this scholarship I think you ought to try it.  So everyone deserves credit and everyone has had an impact in my life ." 


Pleas says he's bound for Macon State to major in information technology management....and thanks to the Gates Millenium Scholarship... he won't have to worry about how to pay the bill for his degree.
PLEAS (PLESS)  VOLUNTEERS AT A NURSING HOME... HELPS WITH THE MACON RESCUE MISSION... AND HAS A HAND IN PRODUCTION AT THE DOUGLAS THEATER DOWNTOWN.
HE SAYS HIS GOAL IS TO BE THE YOUNGEST AFRICAN AMERICAN TO OWN A PRODUCTION STUDIO. 


THIS WEEKEND YOU CAN CHECK OUT HUNTINGTON MIDDLE SCHOOL'S PRODUCTION OF ANNIE JUNIOR... WHILE SUPPORTING VICTIMS OF LAST MONTH'S DEVASTATING TORNADOES.
