GOOD EVENING AND THANKS FOR JOINING US..
I'M LEAH JOHNSON..
AND I'M FRANK MALLOY..THIS IS EYEWITNESS NEWS AT 11.

SOME CENTRAL GEORGIA WATERS AND THE FISH LIVING IN THEM ARE CONTAMINATED WITH DANGEROUS CHEMICALS..
THAT'S ACCORDNG TO THE EPA..
EARLIER THIS WEEK..... OFFICIALS FROM THE ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY CAME TO MACON TO MACON TO SPEAK WITH COUNTY COMMISSIONERS ABOUT AN INVESTIGATION INTO HAZARDOUS WASTE FROM THE ARMSTRONG INDUSTRIES LANDFILL.
AS ELEANOR LISSITZYN EXPLAINS... THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT WANTS TO KEEP THE CHEMICALS FROM SPREADING BUT THE WORD ABOUT THE CONTAMINATION MAY NOT BE GETTING TO THE RIGHT PEOPLE.
THIS IS ROCKY CREEK... IT'S QUIET AND PRETTY FAR OFF THE BEATEN TRACK...ON MACON'S SOUTH SIDE
BUT NEARBY.. PEOPLE STILL FIND THEIR WAY BACK AND GO FISHING...
ABOUT THREE QUARTERS OF A MILE THROUGH THE WOODS... IS THE OLD ARMSTRONG LANDFILL.
THE ENIVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY SAYS THE LANDFILL IS CONTAMINATED WITH POLY CLORINATED BIPHENYLS... OR PCBS... AND THEY'RE PLANNING A CLEAN UP.
MERCER UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR OF ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES STEVEN ROOD SAYS PCBS CAN CAUSE OF A VARIETY OF HEALTH PROBLEMS.
"This chemical affects your genetic make up that can then cause you to have the occurance of some forms of cancer."
THIS WEEK THE EPA SAYS THEY'RE TESTING WHAT THEY CALL THE "HIGH LEVELS" OF PCBS...
ON THURSDAY A MAN WHO IDENTIFIED HIMSELF AS AN ARMSTRONG EMPLOYEE COLLECTED SOIL SAMPLES... BUT WOULDN'T SAY WHAT FOR.
PREVIOUS E-P-A TESTS SHOWED PCBS IN CAT FISH IN ROCKY CREEK... LAKE TOBESOFKEE CREEK AND THE OCMULGEE RIVER...
THE STATE ISSUED A FISH ADVISORY WARNING PEOPLE TO LIMIT THEIR CONSUMPTION...
"You would probably want to make sure that there were a variety of ways that you could get the word out to these people."
"But if you came here to go fishing you may not know that. There aren't any clear signs up, in fact the only one I can see from where I'm standing is clear across the lake. It's a faded yellow sign and you can just barely make out the words PCBS present."
ROOD SAYS MANY OF THE PEOPLE WHO FISH IN ROCKY CREEK NEED TO EAT WHAT THEY CATCH.
"It's very difficult to go back and tell someone well you shouldn't eat these fish because you might get cancer in 10 years."
BUT HE SAYS THE REALITY IS... THESE MUDDY WATERS COULD CONCEAL MORE THAN CATFISH... AND PEOPLE NEED TO KNOW.
STD
EPA OFFCIALS WE SPOKE WITH COULDN'T SAY WHEN THE FISH ADVISORY WENT IN TO AFFECT... OR EXPLAIN WHY IT ONLY TARGETS CATFISH... SAYING THAT STATE OR LOCAL AGENCIES ARE ACTUALLY THE ONES WHO ISSUE THE ADVISORY.
THE EPA WILL BE BACK IN TOWN NEXT WEEK. THEY'RE HOSTING A PUBLIC INFORMATION SESSION TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS AND CONCERNS...
THAT'LL BE NEXT THURSDAY APRIL 28TH FROM SIX THIRTY TO EIGHT P.M. AT BRUCE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.

A WARNER ROBINS MAN ACCUSED OF ROBBING A CHILDREN'S LEMONADE STAND IS ELIGIBLE FOR BOND... AND TODAY A PROSECUTOR SAID THE THEFT MAY HAVE BEEN DRUG-RELATED.
20-YEAR-OLD GAGE ALLEN TURNER WAS IN HOUSTON COUNTY SUPERIOR COURT THIS MORNING.
JUDGE KATHERINE LUMSDEN GRANTED HIM A THREE THOUSAND DOLLAR BOND.
LESS THAN A WEEK AGO.. THE OTHER SUSPECT IN THE CASE... 21-YEAR-OLD AMBER UMBARGER... MADE HER 15-HUNDRED DOLLAR BOND.
TODAY... HER LAWYER JOSHUA MORRISON SAID SHE KNEW TURNER WAS GOING TO STEAL FROM THE STAND... BUT TRIED TO STOP HIM AFTER SHE FOUND OUT IT WAS A FUNDRAISER FOR A SICK CHILD.
Joshua Morrison, Public Defender "She starts asking more detailed questions to the young ladies there... being very pointed trying to make Mr Turner see... hey you don't need to do this."
MORRISON SAYS THEY'VE FILED A REQUEST TO SELECT A JURY FROM OUTSIDE OF HOUSTON COUNTY... BECAUSE THE CASE IS SO WELL-KNOWN.
LUMSDEN ORDERED TURNER TO REMAIN IN HIS HOME... UNDER ELECTRONIC MONITORING.
HE'S NOT ALLOWED TO HAVE CONTACT WITH THE THREE VICTIMS... OR UMBARGER.
TURNER MUST ALSO TAKE RANDOM DRUG TESTS... BECAUSE OF A PRIOR DRUG ARREST.

MILLEDGEVILLE POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING AN ALLEGED RAPE THEY SAY HAPPENED AFTER SCHOOL HOURS ON TUESDAY AT OAK HILL MIDDLE SCHOOL.
AN INCIDENT REPORT SAID A 13-YEAR-OLD OAK HILL MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENT WAS GOING TO A GLEE CLUB MEETING WHEN SHE REALIZED SHE FORGOT HER BOOK BAG.
THE REPORT SAYS SHE WENT INTO THE BAND ROOM... WHERE A 14-YEAR-OLD BOY... AN 8TH GRADER AT OAK HILL... RAPED HER.
THE REPROT ALSO SAID A 7TH GRADER STOOD LOOKOUT OUTSIDE THE BAND ROOM DOORS.
CHIEF DETECTIVE DRAY SWICORD SAYS SCHOOL SURVEILLANCE VIDEO SHOWS THE TWO COMING OUT OF THE BAND ROOM... BUT DOESN'T SHOW EITHER STUDENT ENTERING.
THE MILLEDGEVILLE POLICE DEPARTMENT TOOK THE VICTIM'S CLOTHING AS EVIDENCE.
SCHOOL OFFICIALS DID NOT RETURN OUR PHONE CALLS.

ONE DODGE COUNTY COMMISSIONER SAYS THE CONFEDERATE FLAG HAS FLOWN AT THE COUNTY COURTHOUSE SINCE 2002.
THAT'S ACCORDING TO COMMISSIONER BRIAN WATKINS...
HE SAYS THE BOARD'S VOTE ON MONDAY SANCTIONED THAT THE FLAG IS A MEMORIAL... BECAUSE MINUTES FROM A MEETING NINE YEARS AGO DIDN'T SHOW THAT.
THE SONS OF CONFEDERATE VETERANS PUT THE FLAG AND POLE ON THE COURTHOUSE LAWN... WHERE SEVERAL OTHER WAR MEMORIALS STAND.
KIM BECK.... A MEMBER OF THE GROUP... SAYS IT'S A WAY TO HONOR THE SOLDIERS WHO DIED DURING THE CIVIL WAR.
Kim Beck, Sons of the Confederacy: "There shouldn't be a controversy. This flag represents the people of Georgia balck, white, red, yellow. the Jewish confederates the Irish confederates, the black confederates."
THE DODGE COUNTY N-AA-C-P SENT A LETTER TO COMMISSIONERS ASKING THEM TAKE DOWN THE FLAG.
THEIR PRESIDENT SAYS HE PLANS TO GO TO THE NEXT COMMISSIONERS' MEETING TO ASK THEM TO TAKE IT DOWN AGAIN.

WARNER ROBINS HIGH SCHOOL WANTS TO START A SCHOOL FARM IN THE FALL... WITH CHICKENS.
BUT RIGHT NOW.. CITY CODE DOESN'T ALLOW "FOWL" IN THE CITY LIMITS.
nats- rooster crowing
THESE ROOSTERS AND CHICKENS LIVE ON A FARM IN THE COUNTY.
BUT CITY ATTORNEY JIM ELLIOTT SAYS THEIR NOISE AND SMELL MAY BOTHER PEOPLE IN THE CITY... WHERE HOUSES ARE OFTEN CLOSER TOGETHER.
HE SAYS THE COUNCIL SUPPORTS THE SCHOOL FARM PLANS ... AND IS CONSIDERING AN EXCEPTION FOR CHICKENS ON GOVERNMENT PROPERTY.
ELLIOTT SAYS HE'S DRAFTING AN ORDINANCE THAT SAYS NO ROOSTERS... AND LIMITS THE NUMBER OF CHICKENS.
ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL SABRINA PHELPS SAYS THE HIGH SCHOOL WOULD HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH THAT.
THE FARM WOULD BE LOCATED ON TWO ACRES... NEXT TO WARNER ROBINS HIGH SCHOOL.
PHELPS SAYS THE HOMEOWNER WHO LIVES NEXT TO THE SITE... SUPPORTS THE PROJECT.
ELLIOTT SAYS COUNCIL WILL TALK ABOUT THE ORDINANCE.... NEXT THURSDAY

IN A LITTLE OVER A WEEK... PEOPLE FROM AROUND THE WORLD WILL WATCH ENGLAND'S PRINCE WILLIAM MARRY KATE MIDDLETON.
