AND I'M FRANK MALLOY..THIS IS EYEWITNESS NEWS AT SIX.

MACON POLICE SAY A DRIVER WHO TRIED TO U-TURN.. APPARENTLY CAUSED A THREE-VEHICLE ACCIDENT.
THAT'S ACCORDING TO OFFICER R-J WASHINGTON.
IT HAPPENED ON SPRING STREET... JUST AFTER FIVE-O-CLOCK.
YOU MAY HAVE NOTICED TRAFFIC STALLED... AS POLICE WORKED TO DIVERT CARS... AND CLEAR THE SCENE.
WASHINGTON SAYS NO ONE SUFFERED SERIOUS INJURIES.

YOU WON'T HAVE TO TRAVEL TO WASHINGTON
D-C TO REMEMBER VETERANS OF THE VIETNAM WAR.
A TRAVELING VERSION OF THE VIETNAM VETERANS MEMORIAL ARRIVES IN HOUSTON COUNTY NEXT WEEK.
IT'S SMALLER THAN THE ONE IN THE NATION'S CAPITAL... BUT STILL CONTAINS THE NAMES OF MORE THAN 58 THOUSAND VICTIMS.
LORRA LYNCH JONES TELLS YOU WHY THE GROUP BRINGING IT HERE... COULD USE YOUR HELP TO MAKE IT HAPPEN.
<<nats- talking
TOM McLENDON REMEMBERS THE FIRST TIME HE SAW IT...
Tom McClendon: (21:55) "There's sumthing pulling, theres sumthing pushing inside."
HE ALMOST TURNED AWAY... BUT THE WORDS OF A FELLOW VIETNAM VETERAN... URGED HIM ON.
Tom McClendon: (2:30) "He said well, don't do to that wall, what our country has done to us. I said what is that? Turn your back on it, and walk away."
McCLENDON STAYED.... READING THE NAMES FOR THE SAME REASONS HE WEARS THE SYMBOLS.
Tom McLendon: (14:15) "I'm proud of what I've done over there."
SO IS KATHRYN CARVER. SHE'S FROM A DIFFERENT GENERATION... NO FAMILY TIES TO THE MILITARY.... JUST DETERMINED SHE SAYS... TO HONOR ALL VETERANS.
Kathryn Carver: (2:20) "Sometimes as Americans we kind of overlook the sacrifice they make."
CARVER FOUNDED SERVICE FOR SERVICE IN SEPTEMBER... AN ORGANIZATION TO "FILL IN THE GAPS" WHERE GOVERNMENT BENEFITS TO VETERANS MAY LEAVE OFF.
Kathryn Carver (2:10) "Our vision is to become like a St. Jude hospital, but cater to only military veterans."
SHE ADMITS ITS AMBITIOUS... BUT IN A FEW SHORTS MONTHS.. SHE'S TACKLED THE TASK OF ORGANIZING EFFORTS FOR A ROLLING VIETNAM WALL.... SECURING 33-THOUSAND IN SPONSORSHIP... BUT NEEDING ABOUT 7-THOUSAND DOLLARS MORE.
Kathryn Carver: "Anything donations they could give would help."
SHE SAYS NO DOLLAR AMOUNT WOULD BE TOO SMALL... McCLENDON CALLING IT ALL AN OFFERING OF RESPECT.
Tom McLendon: (23:45) "There's a quote that says giving your life for your country is not the worst thing that can happen to you. Being forgotten is."
HE SAYS SEEING THE WALL... ASSURES HIM... THEY'LL ALWAYS BE REMEMBERED.

A FLAG STIRRED UP CONTROVERSY IN DODGE COUNTY.
THE COUNTY COMMISSION VOTED ON MONDAY TO FLY THE CONFEDERATE FLAG AT THE COURTHOUSE EVERY DAY.
THAT CAME AFTER A LAWYER FROM THE LOCAL N-AA-C-P SENT A LETTING ASKING THEM TO TAKE IT DOWN.
BRITTINY BARBER SHOWS US WHY FLAG FLYING BRINGS STRONG EMOTIONS.
<<
FLYING AT THE DODGE COUNTY COURTHOUSE... A FLAG WITH DIFFERENT MEANINGS FOR DIFFERENT PEOPLE..
John Battle, President Dodge COunty NAACP, "It's a slap in all our faces not just blacks. It's a slap in many white faces."
Brittiny Barber, Eyewitness News, "It flies here on the courthouse lawn right next to a memorial to for those who died from dodge county in all major U.S. wars."
John Battle, "We don't have any heartburns against the with the confederacy veterans. We would like to see it moved form the courthouse because this is public grounds.
BATTLE SAYS... FOR A WHILE THE STARS AND BARS WAVED HERE AT LEAST ONE DAY A YEAR.
BUT MONDAY'S DECISION BY COUNTY COMMISSIONERS TO FLY IT EVERYDAY.... BROUGHT DIFFERENT REACTIONS FROM PEOPLE AROUND TOWN.
Debra Brown, Eastman, "I think it's an insult even one day out of the year is an insult. It represents slavery. It represents prejudices.
Doris Barlow, Dodge County, "I don't see anything wrong with it myself. I'm proud to live in the south."
OTHERS SAY THEY SEE THE FLAG FOR ITS HISTORICAL MEANING.
Michael Daniels, Dodge County: "It's really just a tradition. People think the wrong way being prejudice. It doesn't really mean prejudice. It just mean confederacy."
BUT N-AA-C-P OFFICIALS SAY THEY'LL CONTINUE TO FIGHT TIL IT STOPS FLYING .
John Battle, "This ain't about black and white. This is about all ethnic groups reside here to try to make this a better county."
BRITTINY BARBER 13WMAZ EYEWITNESS NEWS>> BATTLE SAYS HE PLANS TO GO TO THE NEXT COUNTY COMMISSION MEETING TO ASK AGAIN IF THEY'LL TAKE DOWN THE FLAG.
IF THEY DON'T, HE SAYS THE STATE AND NATIONAL N-AA-C-P WILL ADVISE HIM WHAT TO DO NEXT.
WE TRIED TO CONTACT SEVERAL MEMBERS OF THE DODGE COUNTY COMMISSION BUT OUR CALLS WERE NOT RETURNED.

SOME OF YOU ARE COMMENTING ON THE WEB POLL QUESTION ON OUR FACEBOOK PAGE.
ONE PERSON WROTE... "YES! IT REPRESENTS THE SOUTH DURING THE JIM CROW ERA... I AM PROUD TO BE FROM THE HEART OF GEORGIA! WE ARE ALL AMERICANS! BE PROUD OF THAT!"
ANOTHER COMMENTED... "NO, BUT I'M OFFENDED WHEN SOMEONE BURNS AND DISRESPECTS OUR NATIONS FLAG!
WHY DOES EVERYONE WANT TO BURY HISTORY OR PRETEND IT DIDN'T HAPPEN? LEARN FROM IT AND MAKE SURE IT NEVER HAPPENS AGAIN."
A THIRD PERSON SAID... "MY KIDS BEING MIXED, I HAVE HEARD BOTH SIDES ALL MY LIFE... STILL IT IS HERITAGE. YOU LIVE.... YOU LEARN.
GEORGE WASHINGTON, ULYSSES GRANT, MARTIN LUTHER KING JR; THEY ALL LED PEOPLE WHO WERE BEING TAXED BUT NOT GIVEN A VOICE.
TO SAY ONE HAD MORE RIGHT THAN THE OTHER IS TO CONTINUE THE IGNORANCE.
AND SOMEONE ELSE WROTE... "IF ALL IT TAKES IS A FLAG TO OFFEND SOMEONE, MAY NOT BE THE FLAG THAT'S THE PROBLEM. LET IT FLY!

COLLIER SAYS SHE'S JUST LOOKING OUT FOR THE KIDS IN THE AREA.
"I would rather have a comfortable feeling of knowing whether there's someone on there who's safety conscious."
THE SCHOOL SYSTEM IS NOT RELEASING THE NAME OF THE DRIVER... WHOSE CASE IS UNDER INVESTIGATION.
COLLIER SAYS THIS MORNING.... THE KIDS HAD A DIFFERENT BUS DRIVER.
THE DISTRICT HAS NOT RESPONDED TO OUR QUESTIONS ABOUT THE CHANGE.
