LAURENS COUNTY HOMEOWNERS REACT TO THE E-F-ONE TORNADO THAT CAUSED DAMAGE AROUND THEIR AREA.

THIS IS A LATE EDITION OF EYEWITNESS NEWS AT 11.

AN EF-ONE TORNADO HIT LAURENS COUNTY YESTERDAY.
THAT'S ACCORDING TO THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE.

THE TORNADO TOUCHED DOWN NEAR EAST DUBLIN... IN THE BREWTON COMMUNITY.
WINDS WERE ESTIMATED BETWEEN 90 TO 100 MILES PER HOUR.
THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE TEAM SAYS 200 TO 300 TREES WERE SNAPPED OR UPROOTED.
JOSEPH GRUBBS SAYS HE WAS EATING DINNER--- WHEN THE TORNADO HIT.
JOSEPH GRUBBS LAURENS COUNTY" I WAS SITTING AT HOME IN THE DINNING ROOM, IHAVE A BREAK WALL IN THERE THAT SPERATES THE GREAT ROOM BY THE FIREPLACE AND THE TREES FELL THERE ON THAT BRICK WALL AND SAVED MY LIFE. MY WIFE GOT SACRED AND RAN IN TO THE HALL WAY AND FOUR TREES CAM IN ON THE HOUSE AND WE WERE TRAPED INSIDE THERE FOR, I DONT KNOW HOW LONG BUT WE CALLED 911 AND THEY COULD GET TO US BEACUSE ALL THE ROADS HAD TREES DOWN ALL OVER THEM"
DENISE WICKER LAURNES COUNTY "I AM THE MOST PROUD THAT EVERY ONE IS SAVED PEOPLE THAT I DONT EVEN KNOW AND STROM DAMGE THERE HOUSE, I AM PROUD OF EVERYONE THAT COMES OUT ALIVE."

GRUBBS SAYS HIS HOME IS A COMPLETE LOSS... BUT HE WAS ABLE TO SALVAGE A FEW ITEMS.

 

 

LAURENS COUNTY EMA DIRECTOR DON BRYANT SPENT HOURS SURVEYING THE DAMAGE.
HE SAYS ALL ROADS ARE BACK OPEN... AND POWER HAS BEEN RESTORED TO MOST PLACES.
BUT BRYANT SAYS SOME HOMEOWNERS... ARE FACING MONTHS OF REPAIRS.

DON BRYANT, LAURENS CO. EMA DIR."WE HAVE ABOUT 60 RESIDENTIAL STRUCTURES THAT WERE AFFECTED BY THE STORM, ABOUT TWO ARE THREE OF THOSE ARE PROBABLY DESTROYED AND ABOUT THREE OR FOUR MORE ARE CONSIDERED MAJOR DAMAGE"

BRYANT SAYS NO INJURIES WERE REPORTED.

NOW... WEATHER EXPERTS SAY THE STORM THAT RIPPED THE ROOF OFF A BYRON HOTEL LAST NIGHT... WAS NOT A TORNADO.
A NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE CREW SURVEYED THE DAMAGE TODAY.
THEY SAY STRONG WINDS WERE THE CAUSE... BUT AS VANESSA RUFFES SHOWS YOU... THOSE WINDS LEFT A POWERFUL MARK ON THE AREA.
NATS "AND YOU CAN SEE MY TWO CARS ARE BURIED RIGHT UNDER THE ROOF..."

DAYS INN OWNER MANEKLAL PATEL SURVEYS SATURDAY NIGHT'S STORM DAMAGE IN THE MORNING LIGHT...

PATEL "...WHOLE SWIMMING POOL WALL KNOCKED OUT."

PATEL SAYS HE WAS IN HIS APARTMENT ABOVE THE FRONT OFFICE WHEN THE STRONG WINDS HIT.

"I WAS HEARING SOMETHING PULLING OUT AND THROWING AWAY. SO I THOUGHT... IS IT GOING TO HIT THE ROOF?"

IT DID... THE HOTEL'S METAL ROOF PEELED BACK... CRASHING DOWN ON PATEL'S TWO CARS.

A NEARBY BILLBOARD ALSO CAME DOWN... A PIECE OF IT TANGLED IN A FENCE NEAR THE INTERSTATE.

SECTIONS OF THE ROOF SCATTERED TO NEIGHBORING BUSINESSES.

STANDUP "STRONG WINDS RIPPED OFF PARTS OF THE ROOF, CARRIED THEM SEVERAL YARDS OVER TO THIS CITGO AND DROPPED THEM IN THE PARKING LOT."

PATEL SAYS 25 GUESTS STAYING AT THE HOTEL WERE EVACUATED AFTER THE STORM...

RITA SCHILLING "IT WAS JUST FAST... AND IT WAS SCARY..."

... RITA SCHILLING WAS IN ROOM 109 WITH HER SISTER BEVERLY.
THE TWO ESCAPED WITH ONLY A SCRATCH -- THE EMBLEM ON THE FRONT OF THEIR CAR NICKED BY FLYING DEBRIS.

BEVERLY NAGENGAST "IT SOUNDED LIKE A TRAIN. YEAH, REALLY LOUD."

THE WHOLE THING WAS OVER IN A MATTER OF SECONDS... BUT WITNESSES SAY THE BUILDING STORM LEADING UP TO IT TOOK HOURS.

NEAL "I TURNED THE VIDEO CAMERA ON AND IT WAS ACTUALLY FORMING RIGHT OVER THE HOUSE..."

A THICK BLANKET OF CLOUDS COVERED THE SKY... YOU CAN HEAR THE WIND PICKING UP. NATS, WIND

 

WHILE MENACING... THE STORM WASN'T A TORNADO.
THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE TOOK A LOOK AT THE DAMAGE.
IT SAYS A "SUPERCELL THUNDERSTORM" LIKELY CAUSED THE VIOLENT WINDS.

ALEX GIBBS, NWS "THIS ONE I DON'T THINK IT WAS THAT FAST. MAYBE 60 TO 70 MILES AN HOUR."

STRONG ENOUGH... TO GIVE CLEAN-UP CREWS PLENTY OF WORK...(NATS, CLEAN UP) AND PATEL -- PLENTY TO BE THANKFUL FOR.

VENDORS PACKED UP THEIR GOODS... AND SHUT DOWN THEIR BOOTHS AT THE DOWNTOWN ARTS AND CRAFTS FESTIVAL TODAY.

THE CHERRY BLOSSOM FESTIVAL CANCELED TODAY'S EVENTS... AND THE STREET PARTY DOWNTOWN LAST NIGHT... DUE TO THE SEVERE WEATHER.
WHILE MANY OF THE FESTIVAL'S ACTIVITES ARE FREE... THE STREET PARTY IS ONE OF THEIR MAJOR MONEY MAKERS.
CEO KAREN LAMBERT SAYS THEY PLAN TO EVALUATE THE FINANCIAL IMPACT FROM THE CANCELED EVENTS THIS WEEK.

MACON-BIBB FIRE CREWS RESPONDED TO A HOUSE FIRE TONIGHT.

DISPATCH SAYS IT HAPPENED AT 11-73 COLUMBUS STREET...THAT'S NEAR APPLETON LANE AND COLLEGE STREET.
THEY SAY THEY GOT THE CALL AROUND 8-O-CLOCK.

HE SAYS THE CONDOS ARE LOCATED AT SINCLAIR DAM ROAD IN MILLEDGEVILLE.
THAT'S NEAR LONG ACRE STREET AND P-A JONES ROAD.
A NEWS RELEASE SAYS A LIGHTNING STRIKE HIT THE BUILDING'S ROOF... AND FOUR CONDOS WERE DAMAGED BY THE FIRE.
ONE OF THE UNITS SUFFERED EXTENSIVE FIRE DAMAGE... ANOTHER MINOR DAMAGE AND TWO WITH WATER DAMAGE.
BARTH SAYS NO INJURIES WERE REPORTED.

COURSEY SAYS HIS 11 HUNDRED POUND CATCH LANDED HIM ON A SHOW CALLED "HOGS GONE WILD"... THAT'S SET TO AIR ON THE DISCOVERY CHANNEL.
