<<PROPOSALS TO CONSOLIDATE THE CITY OF MACON AND BIBB COUNTY GOVERNMENTS HAVE BEEN AROUND FOR YEARS.
VOTERS REJECTED MERGER PROPOSALS THREE TIMES.. AND THERE HAVE BEEN THREE CONSOLIDATION STUDY PANELS SINCE THEN.
LAST YEAR.. REPRESENTATIVE ALLEN PEAKE TRIED TO GET A CONSOLIDATION PACKAGE THROUGH THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY.. IT DIED IN THE SENATE.
PEAKE OFFERED ANOTHER MERGER PROPOSAL THIS YEAR.. ANDTHE HOUSE APPROVED IT.. IT'S NOW AWAITING CONSIDERATION IN THE SENATE..
AND THAT'S WHERE SENATOR ROBERT BROWN'S PUT TOGETHER HIS OWN PROPOSAL TO UNIFY THE TWO GOVERNMENTS.
AMONG OTHER THINGS.. PEAKE'S PLAN CALLS FOR A NINE MEMBER COMMISSION WITH MEMBERS BEING ELECTED FROM DISTRICTS.. THE NINE MEMBERS WOULD ELECT THEIR OWN CHAIRMAN.
THE MAYOR WOULD BE ELECTED COUNTYWIDE.. AS WOULD THE TOP LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICIAL.
PEAKE SAYS HIS PROPOSAL IS SOUND
1:44:13 Allen Peake, State Representative: I believe we have a structure in my consolidation bill that works. It's modeled after the Athens-Clarke County version and how they setup their consolidation. So all that being said, I look forward to seeing what Sen. Brown has and will give it all consideration.
BROWN DOESN'T SUPPORT THE PEAKE PLAN.. AND HE JOINS US NOW TO DISCUSS HIS PROPOSAL.

SHERIFF MODENA SAYS HE PLANS TO KEEP THE RENOVATION COSTS LOW.
Sheriff Jerry Modena: "We have a work crew that can come in and do most of the work and take care of most of the labor, so the cost to the taxpayer should be, I won't say minimum but it won't be like having to bring in somebody that is going to charge us an arm and a leg."
