GOOD EVENING AND THANKS FOR JOINING US..
I'M LEAH JOHNSON
THIS IS EYEWITNESS NEWS AT 11.

173 PEOPLE WILL LOSE THEIR JOBS WHEN MOHAWK INDUSTRIES CLOSES ITS EAST DUBLIN CARPET PLANT IN APRIL.
THE COMPANY TOLD WORKERS ABOUT THE CLOSING THIS MORNING... AND SENT A FAX ANNOUNCING IT TO LOCAL OFFICIALS.
THE PLANT LAID OFF ABOUT 400 PEOPLE IN 2009.
VICE PRESIDENT OF THE LAURENS COUNTY DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY CAL WRAY SAYS.... THE COMPANY HAD BEEN IN THE CITY FOR 50 YEARS.
HE SAYS MOHAWK WAS THE LAST TEXTILE PLANT IN THE COUNTY.
MOHAWK OFFICIALS DID NOT RETURN OUR PHONE CALLS.

EARLY VOTING IS UNDERWAY ON WHETHER TO EXTEND THE BALDWIN COUNTY SPLOST.
COUNTY MANAGER... RALPH MCMULLEN SAYS THEY WERE EXPECTED TO COLLECT 45 MILLION DOLLARS ON THE CURRENT SPLOST.
SO FAR.... HE SAYS THEY'VE COLLECTED A LITTLE MORE THAN 30 MILLION.
THE EXTENSION OF THE SPLOST WILL HELP FINISH PROJECTS FOR BOTH THE CITY AND THE COUNTY.
BADLWIN COUNTY RECREATION DIRECTOR BILL MCNAIR SAYS... UNDER THE CURRENT SPLOST... THEY'VE BUILT FIVE NEW SOCCER FIELDS... AND A NEW TRACK AMONG SEVERAL OTHER PROJECTS.
BUT HE SAYS... THEY WEREN'T ABLE TO  FINISH THE COMPLEX.
Bill Mcnair, Recreation Director: "We need more ball fields, for our baseball teams and also we need some football areas that would be designated just for football, so it would really help us out as far as taking the pressure off our budget."
MCMULLEN SAYS... IF THE SPLOST IS EXTENDED... IT WOULD LAST SIX MORE YEARS... OR UNTIL THE COLLECTION AMOUNT REACHES 40 MILLION.
EARLY VOTING ENDS MARCH 11TH.

STATE SENATOR ROBERT BROWN SAYS A REPUBLICAN U-S REPRESENTATIVE DID NOT RESPOND APPROPRIATELY WHEN A CONSTITUENT AT A TOWN HALL MEETING ASKED ABOUT ASSASSINATING PRESIDENT OBAMA.
REPRESENTATIVE PAUL BROUN SAID HE WAS STUNNED WHEN SOMEONE ASKED "WHO'S GOING TO SHOOT OBAMA?" AT A TOWN HALL MEETING IN OGLETHORPE COUNTY ON TUESDAY.
BROUN DIDN'T CRITICIZE THE MAN FOR ASKING THE QUESTION.
INSTEAD, HE SAID HE UNDERSTOOD THE FRUSTRATION AND REMINDED HIS AUDIENCE THAT THEY WOULD HAVE THE CHANCE TO HELP ELECT A NEW PRESIDENT NEXT YEAR.
ROBERT BROWN SAYS THE REPUBLICAN SHOULD HAVE RESPONDED MUCH MORE STRONGLY.
State Senator Robert Brown:  "If you do not immediately respond and denounce this kind of rhetoric, it gives tacit approval to it.  And this kind of terrorism, verbal terrorism is a way of encouraging those persons who could very well end up engaging in the kind of behavior that resulted in the near-death experience of Congresswoman Giffords."
TODAY... PAUL BROUN ISSUED A STATEMENT CALLING THE QUESTION "ABHORRENT" AND SAYING HE CHOSE NOT TO DIGNIFY IT WITH AN ANSWER.
PAUL BROUN ALSO SAYS HE ALERTED THE SECRET SERVICE.

MACON PARKS AND RECREATION DIRECTOR DOC DOUGHERTY SAYS HE'S TRYING TO PUT AN END TO THE QUESTION OF WHAT TO DO WITH THE FISCALLY CHALLANGED BOWDEN GOLF COURSE... BY MAKING IT PROFITABLE AGAIN...
THE CITY OWNED COURSE RECENTLY GOT SOME UPGRADES.
AS ELEANOR LISSITZYN  EXPLAINS...THE CITY IS HOPING GOLFERS WILL TAKE NOTICE WHEN PICKING A PLACE TO TEE-OFF.

WILLIE BROWN SAYS HE FELL IN LOVE WITH THE GAME OF GOLF ON THE BOWDEN GOLF COURSE... MORE THAN FIFTEEN YEARS AGO...
"Bowden is the kind of course when it's kept well the people come."
BUT OVER THE YEARS... BOWDEN FELL INTO DISREPAIR...
PARKS AND REC DIRECTOR DOC DOUGHERTY SAYS ROTTING STEPS... FLOODED FAIRWAYS... AND POORLY MAINTAINED TEE BOXES... CREATED THE FEELING... THAT BOWDEN WAS SUB-PAR
nats
"There's a difference between being historic and being trashy... and theres a number of areas in this golf course that really jumped right over that line."
THE COURSE HAS BEEN LOSING ABOUT ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTY THOUSAND DOLLARS A YEAR... AND IT SEEMED ATTRACTING NEW PLAYERS WAS AS TOUGH AS SCORING AS A HOLE IN ONE...
BUT LAST JULY... THINGS STARTED CHANGING...
A FEW SHRUBS HERE... NEW STEPS THERE... AND SOON ENOUGH PEOPLE STARTED NOTICING...
"It really looks nice, makes you feel like their taking care of your home course."
A BIG PART OF THE UPGRADES... INVOLVED LEVELLING... AND RE-SODING THE TEE BOXES...
STAND UP:"This is an example of what the tee boxes used to look like, as you can see it's really just a lot of dirt and uneven ground. With thirty five hundred dollars in sod and countless hours of labor Dougherty says they've completely transformed twenty of Bowden's tee boxes, into place people actually want to play golf."
"It makes it a better place for us to play."

THE CLUB HOUSE ALSO GOT A FACE LIFT...
"One of the biggest thing to me was the first impression."
AND HE'S HOPING THAT FIRST IMPRESSION... WILL BE A LASTING ONE AND KEEP PLAYERS LIKE WILLIE BROWN COMING BACK FOR ANOTHER FIFTEEN YEARS... DOUGHERTY SAYS THEY MADE THE IMPROVEMENTS ON A SHOESTRING BUDGET OF ABOUT THIRTY THOUSAND DOLLARS BY DOING MOST OF THE WORK 'IN-HOUSE'.....
HE SAYS THEY PLAN TO HAVE A GRAND
RE-OPENING CEREMONY IN A FEW WEEKS.
