A PORTION OF RIVERSIDE CEMETERY COULD BECOME PART OF THE I-75/I-16 INTERCHANGE. BRITTINY BARBER JOINS US LIVE FROM THE CEMETERY TO EXPLAIN WHY THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION WANTS TO USE THE LAND.
BRITTINY? FRANK LEAH, RIGHT BEHIND ME IS SOME OF THE PROPERTY THE GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION WANTS TO USE AS AN EASEMENT FOR INTERCHANGE IMPROVEMENTS.
ALTHOUGH THEY'RE ONLY ASKING FOR ABOUT EIGHT THOUSAND SQUARE FEET OF LAND FROM THE CEMETERY...
AN OWNER WE SPOKE TO SAYS THERE SHOULD BE ANOTHER WAY TO DO THE WORK WITHOUT DISTURBING THE DEAD.<< THE 125 ACRES OF RIVERSIDE CEMETERY SITS NEAR THE MAJOR INTERCHANGE OF I-16 AND I-75.
AND THOSE ROADS COULD BE MOVING CLOSER TO THE CEMETERY'S GRAVE SITES.
Mary Standard, Macon: "There would be a wall within 10 feet of my grave sites."
MARY STANDARD OWNS EIGHT LOTS NEAR THE PROPOSED EXPANSION.... SEVERAL NEARBY PLOTS BELONG TO FAMILY MEMBERS.
Mary Standard, "I feel it should be redesigned and not encroach upon the cemetery. It sacrifices the integrity of the of the whole cemetery."
THE GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION HOPES TO GAIN RIGHT OF WAY ACCESS TO ABOUT 8-THOUSAND SQUARE FEET OF LAND ON BOTH SIDES OF THE INTERSTATE.... IT'S MARKED OFF HERE BY THESE STAKES.
THE D-O-T SAYS THE LAND WOULD BE USED AS EASEMENTS FOR INTERSTATE IMPROVEMENTS.
IN A LETTER THEY SAY "NO GRAVES WILL BE IMPACTED BY THE PROJECTS....
BUT STANDARD DISAGREES
Mary Standard: "I makes me think where do I go from here. Who wants to be buried next to a concrete wall. In fact, you couldn't even get the backhoe in there to dig a grave."
AND IN A LETTER TO LOT OWNERS.. THE RIVERSIDE CEMETERY BOARD OF DIRECTORS SAYS RIGHT NOW THERE ARE NO GRAVES IN THE PROPOSED AREA.... BUT THEY ALSO SAY "WE ARE STILL WORKING TO DETERMINE WHETHER ANY EXISTING GRAVES WILL BE AFFECTED BY THE CONSTRUCTION."

FRIDAY... THE NEWSPAPER... RADIO AND T-V OUTFIT... OWNED BY MACON STATE SENATOR CECIL STATON... AIRED VOICE MAIL MESSAGES... LEFT BY MAYOR CHUCK SHAHEEN... ON THE FORMER GENERAL MANAGER... TERRY HARVIN'S COMPANY CELL PHONE.
HILEMAN GAVE 13WMAZ A COPY OF THE VOICEMAILS... HE SAID THE MAYOR LEFT THREE MONTHS AGO.
Mayor Chuck Shaheen: (2:41) "I'm not going to ever watch your station again. If you don't call me tomorrow, I'm calling everyone of yall's sponsors."
David Hileman, WRWR: (5:57) "I have been in the TV industry for over 15 years now. I have never heard a local politician try to to call up and shut down a media outlet, because he does not agree with what that media outlet is putting out over the air."
HILEMAN SAYS HE DOESN'T ALLOW ANYONE INCLUDING STATON TO INFLUENCE THEIR NEWS.
Hileman: "None, what-so-ever."
HE DECIDED TO BROADCAST THE VOICE MAILS FRIDAY... AFTER A LACK OF COOPERATION FROM CITY HALL... FOR A PUBLIC FORUM.
HILEMAN SAYS THEY INVITED THE MAYOR AND COUNCIL TO ATTEND THE FRIDAY FORUM. ALL EXCEPT THE MAYOR AGREED.
BUT BECAUSE THE CITY DIDN;T POST A PUBLIC MEETING NOTICE FOR THE EVENT....THEY WERE FORCED TO CANCEL THE Q AND A SESSION.
Terry Hileman, WRWR General Manager: (6:50) "We decided we wanted to release the voice mail and felt we were being hindered in our trying to let the citizens of Warner Robins meet and ask questions or our city officials."
Lorra Lynch-Jones: "Warner Robins City Hall was closed for Presidents Day Monday, but Mayor Chuck Shaheen returned an e-mail from 13WMAZ, offering his thoughts on WRWR's decision to air the voice mails."
(TAKE GFX)
HE WROTE... "This has been almost six months ago and I am not sure what they reported. I knew Terry Harvin on a personal basis and expressed my concern on his voice mail. No, I did not know he would intend to play them."
ONE OF THE ADVERTISERS SHAHEEN MENTIONED... WAYNE LOWE... DEFENDED THE MAYOR.. SAYING BY PHONE... THAT WRWR CONTINUES TO "BASH WARNER ROBINS"... AND THE MAYOR IS "LOOKING OUT FOR THE CITY."
STD>> HILEMAN SAID HE DIDN'T KNOW OF ANY ADVERTISERS THAT HAD STOPPED SPONSORING THE STATION'S PROGRAMMING... SINCE SHAHEEN LEFT THE VOICEMAILS.

SEVERAL FAMILIES ARE TRYING TO PICK UP THE PIECES AFTER AN APARTMENT FIRE EARLY FRIDAY.
A BLAZE GUTTED A BUILDING AT THE HOUSTON LAKE APARTMENTS IN KATHLEEN... DISPLACING TWENTY FAMILIES.
AS VANESSA RUFFES FOUND OUT IN TONIGHT'S HERO CENTRAL REPORT... SOME LOST EVERYTHING... BUT THEY COULD RECEIVE SOME HELP GETTING BACK ON THEIR FEET.
<<
Ann Stabler, Kathleen "I went to bed Thursday night, laid down and ten minutes later my world turned upside down."

FOR THE PAST FEW DAYS... ANN STABLER SAYS HER WORLD HAS BEEN COMPRISED OF HOTELS... CALLS TO THE INSURANCE COMPANY... AND LIVING OUT OF HER FAMILY'S TRUCK.

SHE AND NINETEEN OTHER FAMILIES AT THE HOUSTON LAKE APARTMENTS WERE DISPLACED FRIDAY MORNING FOLLOWING AN OVERNIGHT FIRE THAT GUTTED SEVERAL UNITS... AND WREAKED SMOKE AND WATER DAMAGE ON THE REST.

A REPORT FROM THE PERRY FIRE DEPARTMENT SAID THE BLAZE TOOK FIVE HOURS TO PUT OUT... BECAUSE OF ITS LOCATION AT THE CENTER OF THE BUILDING.

Stabler "Being in the dark it was just scary, and knowing that some people were losing everything they had."

STABLER CONSIDERS HER FAMILY AMONG THE LUCKIEST TENANTS... BECAUSE THEY DIDN'T LOSE EVERYTHING.
SHE SAYS DESTROYED FURNITURE COULD RUN THEM ABOUT 5 TO 6 THOUSAND DOLLARS... AND NOW THAT THE RED CROSS ASSISTANCE HAS RUN OUT... THEY'RE PAYING TO STAY IN A HOTEL...
STABLER SAYS SHE'S SURE HER INSURANCE COMPANY WILL COVER THE DAMAGES.. BUT SHE KNOWS SOME OF HER NEIGHBORS WILL HAVE TO START FROM SCRATCH...

Stabler "I know one particular family that their insurance had lapsed so they have nothing."

SHE SAYS THE APARTMENT COMPLEX HAS ORGANIZED A DONATION COLLECTION FOR THE AFFECTED FAMILIES... AND SHE'S GRATEFUL FOR THE HELP... BUT FOR NOW... SHE SAYS THE HARDEST PART... HAS BEEN THE WAITING.

"We've just been in limbo for four days, and that's probably been the worst thing."
