GOOD EVENING AND THANKS FOR JOINING US.. I'M LEAH JOHNSON.
THIS IS EYEWITNESS NEWS AT 11.

WITH WARM WEATHER JUST AROUND THE CORNER... MANY PEOPLE MAY BE THINKING ABOUT DOING SOME SPRING CLEANING IN THEIR YARDS.
BUT AS ELEANOR LISSITZYN EXPLAINS... IT'S A DANGEROUS TIME FOR CONTROLLED BURNS... AND TWO SIGNIFICANT BRUSH FIRES IN TWO DAYS IN MIDDLE GEORGIA... HAVE FIRE OFFICIALS WARNING PEOPLE TO BE CAUTIOUS.
"911 got it in as a controlled burn saying it had got out of control."
A BRUSH FIRE IN TWIGGS COUNTY... SHUT DOWN EXIT 18 OFF I-16 FOR ABOUT TWO HOURS FRIDAY AFTERNOON..
AS FIRE FIGHTERS WORKED TO PUT OUT THE FOUR ACRE FIRE...

"Everybody's really tired right now... it's a lot of physical activity."

TWIGGS COUNTY FIRE CHIEF ANDY THOMPSON SAYS WITH LOTS OF DRY BRUSH AROUND... AND WARM WEATHER THEY WERE EXPECTING FRIDAY TO BE BUSY.
"We pretty much knew that today being a beautiful day, everybody wanrs to burn and clean up their property."
HE SAYS CONTROLLED-BURNS ARE A GOOD WAY TO PREVENT ACCIDENTAL FIRES... BECAUSE THEY GET RID OF EXCESS BRUSH... BUT ON DAYS LIKE THESE... THERE ARE ALWAYS RISKS...
"It's just real dry in this area on top of the interstate...it's wet underneath but it's dry on top."

"It stretched about two miles."
FIRE OFFICIALS SAY THEY'RE NOT SURE WHAT CAUSED THIS BIBB COUNTY BRUSH FIRE ON THURSAY.... BUT BIBB COUNTY BATALION CHEIF PRESTON THOMAS SAYS THE SAME WARM WEATHER AND DRY GROUND MADE IT TOUGH FOR FIRE FIGHTERS TO GET AHEAD OF THE BLAZE...

NEITHER FIRE CAUSED ANY INJURIES OR DAMAGED ANY HOUSES... BUT THEY CAME CLOSE...

IN TWIGGS COUNTY THE FIRE JUMPED THE EXIT 18 OFF RAMP... AND CROSSED I-16

Stand up- "Fire fighters say it got within about 300 yards of some homes before it was contained."

THE VOLUNTEER FIRE CHIEF SAYS... HE DOESN'T EXPECT PEOPLE TO STOP USING CONTROLLED-BURNS... BUT HE DOES HAVE SOME ADVICE...
"Make sure you call Georgia Forestry or your local fire department and notify them that way if something does happen we know where to go."
nats
ANOTHER PIECE OF ADVICE... ALWAYS KEEP A HOSE HANDY...
STD
THOMPSON SAYS THE PROPERTY OWNERS RESPONSIBLE FOR TODAY'S TWIGGS COUNTY FIRE WON'T FACE ANY CHARGES OR FINES BECAUSE THEY FOLLOWED ALL PROPER PROCEDURES AND HAD A PERMIT TO CONDUCT THEIR FIRE...

GWINNETT COUNTY OFFICIALS SAY A FIRE THAT WAS APPARENTLY CAUSED BY MAKING METHAMPHETAMINE KILLED THREE SMALL CHILDREN.
A FIRE DEPARTMENT SPOKESMAN SAYS THE 18-MONTH OLD GIRL... AND THREE AND FOUR YEAR OLD BOYS WERE TAKEN TO A HOSPITAL ... WHERE THEY DIED OF THEIR INJURIES.
A POLICE SPOKESMAN SAYS POLICE HAVE CHARGED A 26-YEAR-OLD MAN WHO LIVED IN THE HOUSE WITH THREE COUNTS OF MURDER.
THE CHILDREN'S MOTHER WAS ARRESTED AFTER THE FIRE... AND IS CHARGED WITH TRAFFICKING METHAMPHETAMINE.
POLICE SAY THEY FOUND MORE THAN 192 THOUSAND DOLLARS AND METH IN THE HOME.

LAURENS COUNTY HOPES TO RAISE $53-MILLION WITH SPECIAL OPTION SALES TAX.
THIS ISSSUE GOES TO A VOTE ON MARCH 15TH.
THE SPLOST WOULD FUND THINGS LIKE ROAD.... DRAINAGE AND BRIDGE IMPROVEMENTS.... AS WELL AS FUNDING FOR PUBLIC SAFETY UPGRADES.
COUNTY ADMINISTRATOR BRYAN ROGERS SAYS THE COUNTY HAS HAD THE TAX IN PLACE SINCE 2006.
HE SAYS THIS WOULD EXTEND THAT FOR SIX MORE YEARS.Bryan Rogers: "It's just a continuation not an increase. It is just a continuation for the existing sales tax and I believe right now 150 of the 159 counties in Ga have the same tax."
ROGERS SAY THE SPLOST WOULD ALSO FOCUS ON ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENTS... THAT COULD INCLUDE DEVELOPING AN INDUSTRIAL PARK AND PURCHASING PROPERTY FOR NEW INDUSTRIAL SITES.

AUTHORITIES ARE STILL TRYING TO IDENTIFY A MAN FOUND DEAD OUTSIDE THE MEDICAL CENTER OF CENTRAL GEORGIA....NEARLY FIVE MONTHS AGO.
BIBB COUNTY CORONER LEON JONES SAYS A PERRY RESTAURANT OWNER DROVE THE MAN TO THE HOSPITAL ON SEPTEMBER 23RD....BUT HE WAS DEAD WHEN HE ARRIVED.
THE DRIVER SAID THE MAN WAS AN EMPLOYEE...BUT HE DIDN'T KNOW HIS NAME.
HE SAYS THEY'RE TRYING TO IDENITIFY A HISPANIC MALE... IN HIS LATE 20S OR EARLY 30S.... WITH A TATTOO ON HIS UPPER RIGHT ARM THAT SAYS....CHRISTINE 2000.
IF YOU HAVE ANY INFORMATION ON THE MAN...YOU CAN CALL THE BIBB COUNTY CORONER'S OFFICE AT 621-6314.
AGAIN THAT'S 621-6314.
JONES SAYS THE AUTOPSY SHOWED THAT THE MAN DIED OF NATURAL CAUSES... BUT THEY'D STILL LIKE TO NOTIFY HIS FAMILY.
