DID YOU KNOW A FLU SHOT CAN LEAD TO LIFE THREATENING COMPLICATIONS?
IN RARE CASES... THE SHOT CAN CAUSE GIULLIAN-BARRE (BAH-RAY) SYNDROME WHICH PARALYZES VICTIMS AND CAN PERMANENTLY DAMAGE THE NERVOUS SYSTEM.
WASHINGTON COUNTY SHERIFF THOMAS SMITH BECAME A VICTIM OF THE DISORDER.
BRITTINY BARBER SHOWS YOU HIS JOURNEY FROM A WHEELCHAIR TO THE SHERIFF'S SEAT.
<< NEARLY 20 YEARS AGO THOMAS SMITH WAS WORKING AS A PROBATION OFFICER IN DUBLIN... IN HIS 30'S AND  IN OVERALL GOOD HEALTH THEN HIS LIFE CHANGED IN AN INSTANT.
Sheriff Thomas Smith: "I woke up and couldn't feel my legs.. It was like I slept wrong."
SMITH SUFFERED FROM A DISORDER THAT ATTACKS THE NERVOUS SYSTEM.
HE SAYS IT WAS FROM A REACTION TO A FLU SHOT HE HAD THE DAY BEFORE...
Sheriff Thomas Smith: "The paralysis had moved to the top of my head. All I could do is blink my right eye. One blink was for yes two was for no."
THE C-D-C SAYS GUILLIAN BARRE SYNDROME HITS ABOUT  THREE TO SIX THOUSAND AMERICANS  EACH YEAR...
FOR SMITH.... IT LED TO FIVE MONTHS ON A VENTILATOR AND NINE MONTHS AT THE SHEPHERD SPINE CENTER IN ATLANTA.
Sheriff Smith: "When I was down and depressed they would put me in my wheelchair and take me into the physical therapy room. They would say Thomas look at all these people they don't ever have a chance to walk again... they said "Look you've got a chance."
WHICH PROVED TO BE JUST THE MOTIVATION HE NEEDED...
AFTER MONTHS OF PHYSICAL THERAPY... SMITH REGAINED THE USE OF HIS ARMS AND LEGS.
AND FOUR YEARS LATER...  IN 1996.... FRIENDS ASKED HIM TO RUN FOR SHERIFF.
HE WAS HESITANT AT FIRST.... AND ASKED HIS DOCTOR FOR ADVICE
Sheriff Smith: "He said anyone that can stay on a ventilator for five months they can do anything they want to do."
AFTER 15 YEARS IN OFFICE.... HE KNOWS JUST ABOUT EVERYONE IN THE COUNTY... AND TAKES THE TIME TO VISIT WITH PEOPLE LIKE AT THIS SCHOOL LUNCHEON.
Lt. Mark McGraw, Washington Co. Sheriff's Dept. "It doesn't matter about age or race everybody loves him. He's here to help everybody. "
SMITH STILLS WEARS LEG BRACES AND HAS HAD SURGERY SIX TIMES TO REGAIN THE USE OF HIS HANDS.
BUT HE WANTS PEOPLE TO LEARN NO MATTER THE STRUGGLE....  THERE'S ALWAYS A WAY TO OVERCOME.
Sheriff Smith :" If you don't have hope you're going to have a hard battle... But to have hope and have positive people around you."
AND HE USES HIS EXPERIENCE TO MOTIVATE OTHERS.
Sheriff Smith: "Shepherd calls me when they have a patient with my illness. And I drive to atlanta to see that patient and let them know you're going to be fine. I've been through the same thing."
