GOOD EVENING AND THANKS FOR JOINING US..
I'M LEAH JOHNSON..
AND I'M FRANK MALLOY..THIS IS EYEWITNESS NEWS AT 11.

FORMER MACON-BIBB NAACP PRESIDENT AL TILMAN  SAYS A MACON CITY COUNCIL MEMBER TRIED TO TARNISH HIS REPUTATION BY BRINGING UP HIS TWENTY-FIVE YEAR-OLD CRIMINAL HISTORY..
TILMAN WAS UNANIMOUSLY APPROVED TONIGHT TO SERVE ON THE CITY'S PLANNING AND ZONING COMMISSION..... BUT NOT BEFORE THE COMMUNITY RESOURCES AND DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE HAD A MEETING TO DISCUSS THE DECISION.
DURING THAT MEETING..... TILMAN SAYS COUNCILMAN JAMES TIMELY QUESTIONED HIM ABOUT HIS CRIMINAL BACKGROUND..
TILMAN SAYS HE HAS TWO TWENTY-FIVE-YEAR-OLD MISDEMEANOR CHARGES ON HIS RECORD.
HE SAYS TIMELY TRIED TO CLOSE THE MEETING... WHICH IS TYPICALLY DONE WHEN COUNCIL DISCUSSES PERSONEL MATTERS...
BUT TILMAN SAYS IN THIS INSTANCE.... HE ASKED THEM TO KEEP THE MEETING OPEN..
"I wanted the media and the community to know, I'm not shying away from anything that I've done because my current record speaks for itself."
HE SAYS CALLS TO THE MEDIA FROM A PRIVATE CITIZEN ACCUSING HIM OF BEING A CONVICTED FELON AND THE EFFORTS OF COUNCILMAN TIMELY TO BRING HIS RECORD BEFORE COUNCIL ARE  PART OF A SMEAR CAMPAIGN MOTIVATED BY THE POSSIBILITY TILMAN MAY RUN FOR TIMLEY'S SEAT ON COUNCIL...
"I was receiving numerous calls throughout the community that he was asking questions and trying to possibly sway others to say that I had a bad, bad record, and that they may need to take a closer look at it."
TIMELY DENIES THAT HIS QUESTIONS WERE POLITICALLY MOTIVATED...
HE SAYS TILMAN IS ENTITLED TO HIS OPINIONS... BUT THAT HE WILL NOT COMMENT ON THEM...

IN OTHER COUNCIL NEWS... MARTY WILLETT OF THE FORT HAWKINS COMMISSION SAYS FOR THE FIRST TIME...... FORT HAWKINS WILL BE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC EVERY WEEKEND... STARTING IN MARCH.
HE SAYS HE'S CHANGING ROLES FROM VOLUNTEER CHAIRMAN OF THE COMMITTEE TO A PAID POSITION AS COORDINATOR.
WILLETT SAYS THE MOVE WILL ALLOW HIM TO APPLY FOR GRANTS AND RAISE MONEY FULL TIME... SO THEY CAN FUND THE EXPANSION OF EDUCATION INTIATIVES AT THE FORT... INCLUDING LIVING HISTORY EXHIBITS AND RESUMING ARCHEOLOGICAL DIGS...
"We want to be a local, regional, and national educational resources and economic generator where hundreds of people will be working in living history and archeology."
HE SAYS THEIR EFFORTS TO REVAMP PROGRAMMING AT A NINETEENTH CENTURY HISTORIC SITE WILL COINCIDE WITH THE TWO HUNDREDTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE WAR OF 1812...

STATE SENATOR ROBERT BROWN AND MACON MAYOR ROBERT REICHERT TALKED RACE AND CONSOLIDATION TODAY.

THE STATE SENATOR ALSO OBJECTED TO TALK THAT HE'S HINDERING CONSOLIDATION EFFORTS.
Robert Brown, State Senator: Robert Brown has been an obstructionist when it comes to consolidation and that somehow my motivation is one that has to do with race. I think it's disingenious and it's not something that's very helpful to the discussion in this community.Robert Reichert, Macon Mayor: I thought it was an unfortunate choice of words regardless of what he intended to say, his discussion of red sheets, blue sheets, save the white sheets for the midnight meeting  was construed by some, especially Allen Peake to be racist.
YOU CAN WATCH CLOSE-UP AT NOON SATURDAY AND AT SIX A-M SUNDAY RIGHT HERE ON 13WMAZ.
