A MACON ANIMAL SHELTER GETS A NEW FACILITY AFTER IT WAS ORDERED TO SHUT DOWN LAST AUGUST.
THE VOLUNTEERS AT ALL ABOUT ANIMALS HAD TO FIND EMERGENCY HOMES FOR DOZENS OF PETS... AFTER THEY FAILED A STATE INSPECTION.
AS ELEANOR LISSITZYN EXPLAINS... THEY'RE NOW WEEKS AWAY FROM OPENING A NEW SHELTER.

NATS OF RAKING
THERE AREN'T ANY ANIMALS HERE YET... BUT THERE WERE PLENTY OF VOLUNTEERS SATURDAY AFTERNOON... FIXING UP THE YARD OF WHAT WILL SOON BE THE NEW ALL ABOUT ANIMALS SHELTER...

THE FIFTEEN THOUSAND SQUARE FOOT BUILDING NEXT TO CENTRAL CITY PARK... IS A FORMER SCRAP METAL CENTER... AND ACCORDING TO VOLUNTEER SUSAN MARSHALL GREGORY... IT'S THE PERFECT SPOT FOR A NEW SHELTER...
"THEY CAN TAKE THE DOGS TO THE RIVERWALK... THEY CAN TAKE THEM TO THE PARK... JUST TO WALK THE ANIMALS."

"OVERCROWDING AND THE POOR CONDITION OF THE BUILDING FORCED STATE INSPECTORS TO ORDER ALL ABOUT ANIMALS TO SHUT DOWN THIS FACILITY LAST AUGUST. THAT LEFT STAFF MEMBERS SCRAMBLING TO FIND HOMES FOR ABOUT ONE HUNDRED ANIMALS."

"IF WE DIDN'T GET THEM ADOPTED WE WERE AFRAID THEY'D BE EUTHANIZED."
THE STAFF WORKED TIRELESSLY TO GET EIGHTY OF THE ANIMALS ADOPTED... THE REST... LIKE THESE DOGS... WENT HOME WITH VOLUNTEERS.

GREGORY SAYS THEY HOPE ONE DAY THE BUILDING WILL HOUSE AN ADOPTION CENTER... VET CLINIC... KENNELS... AND AN EDUCATIONC CENTER...

THAT IS... IF THEY CAN FIND THE MONEY...  SO FAR GREGORY SAYS THEY'VE RAISED ABOUT HALF OF THE ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS THEY'LL NEED TO PAY FOR THE FACILITY...
"IT'S BEEN VERY DIFFICULT... A LOT OF BLOOD SWEAT AND TEARS."

BUT WITH A LITTLE LUCK... AND A LOT OF FUNDRAISING... GREGORY SAYS THE FACILITY WILL BECOME A TEMPORARY HOME TO ABOUT TWENTY WET NOSES AND WAGGING TAILS BY MARCH...

GREGORY SAYS THE SHELTER NEEDS DONATIONS OF CASH AND SUPPLIES LIKE DOG FOOD.
