GOOD EVENING AND THANKS FOR JOINING US... I'M BOFTA YIMAM.

THIS IS A LATE EDITION OF EYEWITNESS NEWS AT 11.

THE NEXT SESSION OF THE GEORGIA GENERAL ASSEMBLY BEGINS NEXT MONDAY.

THAT'S A LITTLE MORE THAN A WEEK AFTER ATTENTION ERUPTED... OVER SENATE MINORITY LEADER ROBERT BROWN'S COMMENTS AT A TUESDAY TAPING OF OUR CLOSE-UP PROGRAM... AND HIS NEWS CONFERENCE THURSDAY THAT TURNED VIOLENT.

VANESSA RUFFES SPOKE WITH BROWN'S COLLEAGUES... ABOUT HOW THIS COULD AFFECT THE UPCOMING SESSION.

<<

(Close-up file) "What does his wife do then? Put some red sheets on the bed and get rid of the blue sheets? ... but keep the white ones over there because we might need those for the midnight meeting."

DEMOCRATIC SENATOR ROBERT BROWN'S CONTROVERSIAL COMMENTS LAST TUESDAY...

(Assault file video) ... COUPLED WITH HIS NEWS CONFERENCE THURSDAY TURNED VIOLENT... (NATS) ... HAVE GIVEN THE SENATOR A HIGH PROFILE LESS THAN TWO WEEKS BEFORE THE NEW GENERAL ASSEMBLY SESSION.

(NATS, File "I have reported a threat on my life...")

POLICE SAY THAT THREAT DID NOT COME UP DURING THEIR MEETING WITH BROWN... AND HE REFUSED TO DISCUSS IT WITH US.

HIS COLLEAGUES SAY THE NEGATIVE ATTENTION COMES AT A TIME WHEN LEGISLATORS HAVE A LOT ON THEIR PLATE... MOSTLY CENTERED ON THE BUDGET..

O'Neal "We've got some huge holes to fill..."

HOUSE MAJORITY LEADER LARRY O'NEAL... A REPUBLICAN OUT OF HOUSTON COUNTY... SAYS THURSDAY'S ASSAULT ON A NEWS PHOTOGRAPHER BY MALIK BROWN... WHO APPEARS TO BE PART OF ROBERT BROWN'S GROUP... DOESN'T REFLECT POORLY ON THE SENATOR...

BUT HE SAYS... BROWN'S STATEMENTS MADE ON "CLOSE-UP" DO.

O'Neal "Most Georgians, like I am, these days, are kind of tired of political rhetoric and personal attacks."

O'NEAL SAYS... HOWEVER... HE EXPECTS FELLOW LEGISLATORS WILL MOVE ON GIVEN THE NEED TO DO SO.

O'Neal "We really don't need any distractions. That's why I'm confident this whole thing with Senator Brown is behind us."

Randall "I don't think Representative Allen Peake allowed Senator Brown to explain what he meant..."

REPRESENTATIVE NIKKI RANDALL... A DEMOCRAT OUT OF BIBB COUNTY... SAYS SHE THINKS THE SITUATION HAS GOTTEN OUT OF CONTROL... BUT SAYS BROWN'S GOOD REPUTATION OUTSHINES ANY OF THE NEGATIVE LIMELIGHT HE'S RECENTLY RECEIVED.

Randall "His knowledge, his mild temperament, and his honesty as a legislator that he has created and maintained throughout the years will continue to propel him as the leader."

SHE TOO SAYS LAWMAKERS HAVE NO TIME TO GIVE TO DISTRACTIONS...

THAT'S WHY SHE'S SURE NEXT MONDAY WILL BE ALL ABOUT GEORGIA'S FUTURE... RATHER THAN BROWN'S PAST.

VANESSA RUFFES 13WMAZ EYEWITNESS NEWS.

BOTH O'NEAL AND RANDALL SAY THEY ENJOY A RESPECTFUL WORKING RELATIONSHIP WITH BROWN... AND CALL THE RECENT NEGATIVE ATTENTION UNCHARACTERISTIC OF THE SENATOR.

BROWN DID NOT RETURN OUR CALLS TODAY.

WE ALSO ASKED O'NEAL AND RANDALL TO WEIGH IN ON PARTY SWITCHING... THE ISSUE WHICH HEATED UP THE CLOSE UP DISCUSSION BETWEEN SENATOR BROWN AND REPRESENTATIVE ALLEN PEAKE.

BROWN'S "WHITE SHEETS" COMMENT REFERRED TO AN UNNAMED DEMOCRATIC LAWMAKER... WHO RECENTLY SWITCHED TO THE REPUBLICAN PARTY.

AT LEAST EIGHT GEORGIA DEMOCRATS IN THE STATE LEGISLATURE HAVE CHANGED PARTIES SINCE THE ELECTION.

HOUSE MAJORITY LEADER LARRY O'NEAL SAYS FOR THE MOST PART... THE REPUBLICAN PARTY DIDN'T TRY TO RECRUIT DEMOCRATS TO SWITCH... BUT HE SAYS THEY'RE GLAD TO HAVE THEM.

ONeal "Most of the ones I've talked to told me that the Democratic party as a whole and especially on a national level had moved away from the principles that they espoused."

DEMOCRATIC REPRESENTATIVE NIKKI RANDALL ON THE OTHER HAND... SAYS LAWMAKERS WHO SWITCHED POST-ELECTION WERE DISHONEST AND DID NOT REPRESENT THEMSELVES FAIRLY TO THEIR CONSTITUENTS.

Randall "I think those acts are cowardly because if you want to run as a Republican, you run in the Republican primary. I don't believe that three weeks after an election you all of a sudden feel like your philosophy is more in line with the other party."

TWIGGS COUNTY STATE REPRESENTATIVE JAMES "BUBBER" EPPS... IS THE LATEST GEORGIA LAWMAKER TO SWITCH FROM DEMOCRAT TO REPUBLICAN.

HIS HOUSE DISTRICT ONE-40 SEAT INCLUDES TWIGGS AND WILKINSON COUNTIES... AND PARTS OF JONES AND BIBB.

JASON ASHFORD IS SCHEDULED TO BE SWORN IN AS HOUSTON COUNTY'S STATE COURT JUDGE TOMORROW MORNING.

THE SWEARING IN CEREMONY TAKES PLACE AT 10-O-CLOCK IN HOUSTON COUNTY'S STATE COURT.

ASHFORD FILLED IN AS HOUSTON'S INTERIM D-A FOR A FEW MONTHS... AFTER KELLY BURKE RESIGNED LAST SPRING.

BEFORE FILLING IN... ASHFORD SERVED AS HOUSTON'S CHIEF ASSISTANT D-A.

IN NOVEMBER... ASHFORD BEAT OUT CANDIDATES CHARLES BOND AND FRED GRAHAM... FOR THE STATE COURT JUDGE SEAT.

HE HAD MORE THAN HALF THE VOTES.

IT'S BEEN ABOUT TWO DAYS SINCE SOME OF YOU MADE YOUR NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS... AND YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT IT ON OUR FACEBOOK PAGE.

WE ASKED... HAVE YOU ALREADY BROKEN YOUR NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTION?

DEBBIE HODGES SAYS "NOPE... GOTTEN RID OF ALL THE NEGATIVE CLUTTER... DOING WELL WITH MY DIET... AND EXERCISED THIS MORNING."

BRETT R BUNDRICK SAYS "ONLY MADE ONE... AND BROKE IT BEFORE THE END OF THE FIRST."

BE SURE TO LET US KNOW HOW YOU'RE DOING WITH YOUR RESOLUTION...
